Perhaps they belonged to a Westboro Baptist Church type denomination, which I suppose could justify the involvement of social services. Its really difficult to tell what the government was thinking since the sources presented would likely be biased against the government.
But, based on the information given, its possible that the government has taken the charve that educating a child in a religious faith is child abuse (one made not infrequently by some atheists) rather seriously. Disturbing if true.
