Does anyone know what the Church’s position on Nostradamus is?

It seems that modern-day occultists have claimed him for their own, which makes sense if you think about all the divination, prophesies, etc. associated with him. But I heard he was Catholic, and was just wondering what the Church’s position is on him…if there even is an official position.

After posting this thread I discovered that somone had already opened a thread on this same topic a couple months ago: What is the Church’s position on Nostradamus?.

So…if anyone has anything else to add that wasn’t covered in that old thread, feel free to reply here. 🙂

Specifically, I am interested in the claim that one or more of his books was placed on the Church’s list of forbidden books. Can anyone verify or dispute that?

As I’m sure you’ve learned, Nostradamus was a Catholic (convert) who dabbled in the occult. The Church has not taken a position on him specifically, but She has condemned many of his methods.

The Index Librorum Prohibitorum has undergone many revisions, so I can’t say for sure that any of his works have never appeared. He obviously could not have appeared on the first incarnation of this list, which was published just a few years after his birth. But I can say that he did not appear on the 1948 edition: cvm.qc.ca/gconti/905/BABEL/Index%20Librorum%20Prohibitorum-1948.htm. The 1948 edition was the most comprehensive (the 32nd edition, with more than 4,000 titles), although some books which were previously listed may have been delisted. However, given the nature of Nostradamus writings, I find it hard to believe that a case could have been made to delist his writings once listed. I think the Church has always simply ignored this kook.
