Not allowed to confession

I once had a priest tell me that I was not allowed to go to confession there because I didn’t live in that within the particular boundries of that parish.
I have almost ALWAYS confessed in other DIOCESES [and in other parishes].

I would say to her “GET OUT OF THIS CHURCH!”.

She was totally absolutely out of order … and she needs to confess herself … for violating the First Commandment.
Perhaps the more pointed way of approaching it would be to interrupt her and say, “Ma’am, I’m sorry, would you like my space in this line up? It seems you might needs this visit more than I do.”

Only can have communion in a state of grace.

Anybody is welcome to confession.

They might not get an absolution, depending on if they verbalized they intend to continue in the sin (happened to a friend of mine in an irregular marriage–she understood and didn’t get mad, but she and the priest prayed together).

It’s none of the lady’s beeswax, however…😱

I have often advised people to get to confession … and universally, the people would report the priest says “welcome back”.

In the old days, they had screened booths so the priest could not see the penitent.

There are some churches run by religious orders that may have as many as 20 priests hearing confessions.

I was once ushered in the confession line by an old lady too when I was high school. She was behind me and she told me I wasn’t moving fast enough and this is all our fault young people, we are everywhere and no one can move around because of us. So I let past my turn because that was obviously what she wanted. One of the priests heard this and he yelled at her it’s her fault young people don’t come to church any more. Then he told me not to mind her because she obviously needs a lot of time because she has a list full of sins. At that time if someone would have told me to get out of confession because I don’t belong there I would have done it since I wasn’t really sure what to do, my family isn’t religious and everyone who comes to church just knows.
If I were you I would go back to confession to the same church and ignore the same woman. Or maybe on that day her opinion on who should do what will be different. You never know…

How sad. That’s not up to her to decide or advise on. That is what the priest is for, ask him. Don’t listen to any other people about who should or should not go to confession, a priest will decide and give advice privately in the confessional. He is acting for Jesus so no one else can do that. Pray for her. I expect she meant well but her actions could be extremely harmful.

What if one of those single mums (how do they even know that they are single mums?!)
Yes, I too wondered exactly how this woman was aware of the nature of these ladies’ marital/ relationship status.

They could be validly married in the Church and have husbands who simply don’t attend church/ sacraments, or husbands who are working at the time mum is going to church.

They could also be single and currently leading a chaste life, regardless of whatever they did in the past.

How anyone other than a confessor or an immediate family member of the women involved would know any of this for sure is beyond me.

Even if these women were living in an invalid marriage, for all we know (and for all the woman who told them off knows), they could have resolved to live as brother and sister with their “husbands” (as it is my understanding that this often happens when there are children in an invalid marriage, and it would be harmful to the children to separate), and be on the way to confession to confess this very sin. If a person is unable to receive absolution, that is up to the priest to decide, not an usher who hasn’t been given a window into the disposition of the penitent.

The only time I could view this as remotely appropriate would be if a person was waiting in line for confession and specifically said, “I’m not sorry for sin x, but I’ll confess it, so I’ll be forgiven.”

If some old bag came up and said that in front of me in a confession line, I’d give her a super-size piece of my mind.
Everyone is welcome in the confessional. Confessionals are for sinners. It’s disgusting that someone would discourage others from going.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who would say something. Because I surely would have.

Perhaps that old bat needs to take THAT to Confession.

Confession is for all Catholics no exceptions! Personally I feel that this lady was completely wrong for speaking this way, how did she know anything about these women and their current marital status? And is it anybody else’s business? The Confessional is a place to come closer to Jesus. I wouldn’t be happy if I witnessed this. I can’t imagine how those women must have felt!

Is it Wrath if you can claim Jesus as your example? It’s in church, after all.
(tongue firmly in cheek)

While technically true as confession is a sacrament and you cannot partake when not in communion, she handled that poorly and had no authority to determine that. If you are there to repent that is between you and your confessor. The priest at that point would make the decision to offer absolution or advise you on how to make a good confession with true repentance and how to correct your state. I would have privately spoke to the confessor about her behavior and said a prayer for her. I apologize for any hurt it may have caused. God bless you.

how does she even know who is legally married or not? and even if she does have that knowledge, it’s not for spouting out in public in front of everyone else and trying to force you not to go to confession.

it’s completely inappropriate, only a priest should discuss this with a particular person in private.

and let’s say a person was in a irregular marital state, how does this person even know if it’s been rectified or not? a person who fornicated and was not married just has to confess it and not do it again, they don’t have to get married. someone who is not legally married in the church can get their marriage blessed. a couple could live chastely as brother and sister if an annulment was somehow not possible for them. I don’t imagine this person would have all those details of peoples’ private lives.

I am very sorry if this caused you any grief

Is she a baseball bat, a fruit bat, a vampire bat, or just a bat bat?

I kind of like bats, in a way. They remind me of “Dracula”.
