I confess I have been, for years, a skeptic concerning Facebook and similar networking websites, and avoiding it like the plague (I’m on LinkedIn and I love it, though). However, my parents (and some CAFers on a previous thread), aware of my loneliness problems, have recently mentioned that I should join Facebook in order to be more “on the market” (for friendships and possible courtship).

And so I did. However, after five minutes of utilization, and some half an hour of prayer, I’ve decided to immediately cancel my account. Am I the only one to feel tremendously uncomfortable on Facebook? I cannot stand all those women in bikini or indecent dress. No doubt I’m probably weaker in this point than the average guy, but I still wonder how can you stand it.

Anyone with similar feelings/experiences?

Bikinis really aren’t the end of what you can encounter on Facebook. In fact, it can be just innocent pictures from vacations from people who just don’t really get why they should be ashamed of themselves getting some sun (I guess they’re lucky).

On the other hand, there’s a lot of stupid stuff like “I’ve got up and brushed my teeth - 20 friends like this”, which is a time thief. Basically got to make sure time is not slipping between your fingers. 😉

As for privacy, depends. I don’t mind my details being there, although some are reserved for friends or at least friends of friends. I can understand why people dislike sharing information but I believe in most cases the fear is excessive.

Networking isn’t bad, although it has bad parts to it, it certainly does.

@Chevalier: I don’t want to turn this thread into a bikini discussion (far be it from me!), but I simply don’t feel confortable - indeed I feel my soul is threatened - by the vision of a girl in bikini. Thus, I cannot be on facebook, it seems…

Ummmm, I have no bikini women on my list of facebook friends. You choose your friends wisely and that does not happen.

I mean the suggestions? “Perhaps you know this person” and then appear woman in bikini, with immodest dress, etc.

Oh well.

Well, I have several female friends with bikini pictures on facebook, but I am in my 20’s so that’s not all that unusual. However, I don’t mind it.

If it’s tough for you then you’re doing the right thing by avoiding it.

I’m not sure what you mean. I have exactly one friend who posts photos of herself in risque outfits, but we all (my friends and I) get a kick out of it because it’s just so ridiculous. Other than that, there might be people’s vacation pictures containing women in bikinis or other bathing suits, but I’d have to be searching through profiles to find them and they are certainly no different than what you might encounter on an actual vacation.

For me, Facebook pretty much resembles my real life in terms of the people, comments, events, photos, etc. I encounter.

Facebook has so many issues with privacy and data farming, I’m surprised anyone but the truly brain dead still use it.

Good on your for canceling your account.

You’re not missing much. I spend less and less time on it. Not because of any bikini pictures, just too much negativity. I swear some people have nothing better to do than bash everything, the Church, their jobs, their family, their “old” iphone, their terrible day, holy first world problems batman, get a life!

While you are certainly entitled to your own opinion, I find it extremely rude that you describe those who use Facebook as “truly brain dead”! That is really lacking in charity and you’d be pretty surprised how many devout, intelligent Catholics right here on CAF use Facebook and use it wisely! I see that you are new here- perhaps you weren’t aware of the forum rules regarding a charitable reply to others…even those who hold a different opinion than yourself.

Like Castello who posted earlier in the thread, I guess we just keep a conservative bunch of friends. Anyone who starts Church bashing or being rude and negative either gets removed from the friend list or simply gets removed from my newsfeed. It’s all in how you use it. They only ads that pop up for me on the side are related to the pages I “like” or become a fan of (cyber junk mail).

And Catholics, including here on CAF, also do other things that are objectively stupid.

Facebook data mines. Facebook is ultimately bad.

I gave you 3, shall I give you 7?

Facebook is the only means of communication that I have with a priest-missionary (who I am firmly convinced is a saint, BTW) in Tanzania. For this alone, I consider FB a blessing.😉

I have hidden a lot of people, but a few of them are family or very old friends and I do like to stay updated on what they are doing.

Yeah, I have a few people that post the most mundane things. I ended up taking them off my newsfeed (so I don’t need to hear that they had to go out and buy ferret food ;)), so know if I want to see what they’re up, I just take a quick look at their homepage.

Your comment about “truly brain dead” was still lacking charity…no matter how many sources agreeing with your opinion you’d like to post.

If you both have facebook, you both have email.

If you both have addresses, and are not transient, you both have the ability to write letters.

etc.

That’s like saying McDonald’s is your only source of nutrition while you drive by the grocery store to get there. lol.

Two of my facebook friends are catholic priests-and they aren’t brain dead. Oh-speaking of brain dead-one of my friends is a mortician-she used to be in my reserve unit. So no-there are many intelligent folks on facebook. It is the bad apples that gives a bad name to facebook in general. 🤷
