I’m not talking about not eating meat on Friday or Lenten fast. I mean actual reduction of food intake to a level that causes discomfort (but obviously enough to survive and carry out basic functions).

The only consequence I’ve felt is that I get tired, can’t get my work done, and become easily irascible over trivial manners (e.g., co-workers).

(How) does fasting work for you? Does it feel spiritually refreshing?

It’s been said to reduce fatty/meaty foods to subdue lustful passions. Does it actually work?

Interesting question.
Sometimes when I feel like I’ve done something bad, I’ll decide to skip a meal or fast the next day. Obviously, it is not a comfortable thing to experience, but it is spiritually refreshing. I am always happy about it when I go to bed at night. If I am terribly hungry, I think of how little what I am doing is in comparison to Jesus. All in all, I don’t enjoy fasting, but it is spiritual rewarding. Hope this helps! God bless!

I’m counting Calories for fat loss right now. Would taking a similar approach work for you? Determine your maintenance caloric requirement, decide on a deficit level you would find suitable to call fasting, set protein to maintain lean body mass and then decide how you want your carb / fats balanced?

(I am learning about body recomposition at a blog series by Lyle McDonald. He writes the occasional vulgarity, but so far I have not seen any profanity, if I’m properly understanding the difference.)

Try having a multivitamin, at noon or early evening. It will boost you and help you get through the rest of the day, without feeling tired, or having headaches.

I do the bread & water fast (9 days) but changed it to include tea or coffee. The first time it didn’t go well. Felt weak/tired, irritable, and had mild headaches. You want to be able to smile and not seem miserable. So…
I then included the tea, nutritious bread ie with whole grain, rasin etc, & the multivitamin.
This made a very big difference, though the fast is still tough.

Also include prayer or it will feel like dieting.

At the end of it, you do feel drained physically, but on the flip side you will find yourself spiritually uplifted.

I pray your fast goes well.

I now have a metabolic disorder so my metabolism is too high, so I have to eat something substantial every hour to avoid hypoglycemia. The one hour Eucharistic fast is hard enough. Fortunately my priest gave me permission to drink something sugary if need be without breaking the fast.

Back when I could fast, it had a positive effect on me spiritually. I found it easier to pray without having to digest a full meal. You could experiment with what you choose to eat and when you put your full meal.

Thanks all

I don’t mind the slight discomfort of reasonable fasting. (Honestly, I can’t live on beets and carrots like those ascetics out there.)

It would be nice if I could fast without feeling physically weak and unable to do work or cranky and become uncharitable towards my neighbors.

Or maybe that’s part of the lesson…?

I need to make reparations for my sins, but I have no access to Sacrament of reconciliation. And I get distracted with prayer.

Any suggestions for doing penance that doesn’t ultimately lead me to commit more sins against my neighbors by becoming an irritating personality?

I doont fast either. I’m an engineering student.
I can’t afford to skip meals all day or eat noodles, then not be able to concentrate.
My diet is like this Coffee, RedBull, Chinese, chick fila. cliff bars.
repeat. x7.
