I have had 6th months to get a job and if I didn’t I got my car taken away. We’ll I decided to procrastinate about it and my Dad made good on his word. I fully take responsibility for my actions and I realize this is my fault. I have applied 30 places and I have had 2 callbacks. I am going into an interview tonight at Subway. I have decided not to have my Dad take me because he makes me really nervous. He told me he wants me to wear slacks and I don’t think that will help. My Grandparents and my Mother have said it wouldn’t and also my sister. I didn’t get the last job and he thought it was because I didn’t wear his idea because people that worked there said I would get made fun of by the manager and I said I couldn’t work Wednesday nights because I volunteer with the 8th graders at our Parish helping them get ready for confirmation. When I am away from my Dad the Job idea seems fun but, when I am around him, I am like ugghhs! haha. So if you have any advice for me I would surely appreciate it.
Thanks and God Bless.
Why would you get made fun of?
Your name (on CAF) is StephenL. That sounds like a boy’s name. So why wouldn’t you wear slacks? What ELSE would you wear?
When you interview for a job, you have to give the impression that you would really really LOVE to work at that place! You cannot come across to the interviewer as “ugghhs! haha.” You’ll never get a job if you show that kind of attitude.
Subway is a great place to work. My daughter started working there when she was 14, and she loved it. She also got one free sub sandwich everyday, so she tried every kind of sandwich that they offer!
As for your parish volunteer work–well…you won’t like hearing this. There are others who can do that volunteer work, probably other young teenagers who aren’t old enough to drive yet and are looking for a way to serve God. Let them take over for you, because it sounds like you are old enough to serve God by helping your family and holding down an actual paying job.
Teenagers who drive are very expensive for their parents. Your parents are probably thinking about your college or trade school expenses and hoping that by then, you will have some money saved so you can at least pay for something.
Learning to hold down a real job (not just babysitting or shovelling snow) is a valuable skill, and the sooner you learn it, the better. You did notice that my daughter started her first “real” job at age 14?
There comes a time when you have to walk away from things that you did while you were younger, like the volunteer work at the parish. You have other responsibilities now. And I agree with another person on this thread–there are many things that you will have to do in life that don’t sound “fun.” You have to learn to see “fun” in life no matter what you are doing and you also have to learn to be cheerful when doing things that aren’t fun at all-that’s what it means to be grown up.
Stop stalling and get up and GO FOR IT! You’ll love Subway!
