Been there, done that. I wouldn’t do the wait-until-we’re-married thing again. It puts a lot of stress on the relationship. Sex is a normal part of a healthy relationship, and it seems to me that waiting too long harms the relationship.

This isn’t exactly what you were looking for, but I’m sure numerous people will answer your question more directly.

I feel what you are saying Benedictus. I never saw myself as the married type. But I am past 40 and not a virgin. And I don’t see myself ever being married. In fact I know I will never get married. Once I lost my virginity, I saw how over rated sex was. My life’s focus changed dramatically and I began to make better choices in friends and relationships in general. I have no regrets when it comes to not being a virgin at this stage of my life.

Husband and I were together for 5 years before getting married. It works much easier when both are of the same mind-set and beliefs. We were both virgins prior to the wedding night, which I think helped because neither one of us had the “knowledge”. We were married in 2003, so it’s not like we lived in the old days and my husband was a normal, hotblooded young man. We were surrounded by almost all of our contemporairies either living together or sexually active prior to marriage.

The natural desire is definitely not easy to fight. We attended mass together almost every weekend. A lot of prayer - especially during times when it seemed extremely hard. My sister acted as a chaperone many times. I also had my parents to use as role models. They were also both virgins prior to marriage and my mother always insisted on my dad’s younger brother and sister to be chaperones when they went out on dates. I wasn’t as stringent as my mom in terms of having my sister there all the time, but I also knew my threshold AND his threshold.

The other factor for me, too, was that I was once sexually molested and forced to fondle that pervert as a child. (He thankfully never raped me and I was strong enough at 5 to not allow him to do it again a second time - never tried it again afterwards, but when he lived in the house for a few months I did keep my door locked.) Through that horrible experience, I gained a sort of strange wisdom to never allow anyone to take advantage of me again and to protect myself against being used sexually - wanting to be sure that whoever I would eventually share myself with would be worthy of me and were truly a holy person. The doors weren’t opening until the marriage was blessed by God and I was absolutely sure of the person. But again, that didn’t make “waiting” easy at all especially since I was very sure of my future husband.

Most importantly, though, it was very important for us to save that act of love for when we celebrated the sacrament, and for us, it was so worth it. We just kept that first and foremost in our minds. Like I said, what made it “easier” (NOT easy) was the fact that we both wanted this for each other and respected each other for that. It may not have been as easy to resist had we been with someone else.

Hi

How do you manage not to have sex until marriage, how do you manage to fight off this natural desire for so long?

Hope knowone takes this question the wrong way, its just i’m not catholic and i just wondered.

Thanks
Andy
By praying for one’s future spouse (even if you haven’t met him or her, yet) and by reserving the fulness of one’s love for that person.

One strategy is to write love letters to your future spouse every time you are tempted to do anything unchaste, whether it be premarital sex, or even if it’s nothing more than just a temptation to have an inappropriate emotional attachment, or harmless-seeming bonding rituals.

HI! NO Means No for Premarital Sex!! Yes i do believe in Clean-Sex Till ur Married. Its Hard too find/Get a Clean SnowWhite out there in this Day of age…YUP! Dont want any aids and Herpes, etc…Im very Happy today and Very blessed too.St.Michael was with me every step of the way.Amen.Thank-God/My Blessed Mother Too.I say the Rosary every Week.i attend church-Mass every sundays.Sunny!👍 🙂

One word: babies.

Whether people want to admit this or not, part of having sex means the potential of having babies. People seem to forget this little fact.

I’m not saying sex is just for procreation here. That’s not Catholic teaching. But if someone isn’t ready for the responsibility of raising a child, then they aren’t ready for sex. And a child is meant to be raised by a steady couple bonded in marriage.
Ditto.

Also, if you have sex before marriage, the very fact that you are shows that you aren’t mature enough. You are not committed to the person you are… yea. If you can’t commit to your paramour, then you obviously can’t commit to a baby.

You tell yourself that girls/ women deserve better than to be test driven like cars.

All good responses (with the exception of Benedictus and Bella3502), but there are a few that should strongly be reiterated:
In a relationship, you establish proper boundaries and avoid situations which will be tempting and could lead to bad decisions
-how do you not fall off a cliff? stay away from the edge.
(stay away from temptation)
Stay away from temptation.
To be totally blunt - keep your pants on, and don’t get so close to the flame that you get burned. It’s not impossible. It’s only a matter of setting your priorities and being serious about them.
In other words, avoid the near occasion of sin and “bad companions”. Keep company with “good companions”, like the following poster did:
Husband and I were together for 5 years before getting married. It works much easier when both are of the same mind-set and beliefs. We were both virgins prior to the wedding night
Additionally, ask yourself this: “Self, is having pre-marital sex worth going to hell for?” Sex outside of marriage is a mortal sin, and according to the Church mortal sin is that sin which is so serious that it robs the soul of the sanctifying grace required to enter heaven.

Another thing to ask yourself is this: what if you had sex, broke up, and fell in love with a virgin girl? If I were in that position, I would certainly feel guilty that I would be cheating her, because I would not be giving her the same 100% she is giving me, (confession or no confession), and I would certainly feel that I would be taking unjustly from a male virgin that would be giving her the 100% she has earned.

Why do you feel it harms a relationship? I had a co-worker who said that she hoped her son never marries a virgin, since the virgin would inevitably cheat on him. Is that why you think so?

“Blessed are the pure in heart; for they shall see God.”

It’s the only good reason. Fortunately for us poor mortals, it’s a VERY good reason.

I was curious about this also, but was afraid that asking would derail the thread.

Actually, it’s moving too fast that harms the relationship. If you are kissing and cuddling on the first date, then of course you are going to be frustrated by the third or fourth month.

But if you save the kissing and cuddling until you know you’re a permanent “item” (around the third or fourth month of the relationship) then saving sex for marriage (one year) won’t be so difficult.

I know where you are coming from Andy. It takes strength and personal commitment to do this. If you love this woman you will honor her. And when you are married she will honor you!

You should read together with your fiance and discuss The Good News About Sex and Marriage by Christopher West. If the Parish doesn’t give you a copy for your marriage prep, get one yourself.

I see in another post that she is a strong Catholic. They’re the best ones arent’ they? I know. Like I said, I know where you are coming from. 😉

Keep us posted!

Benicticus – Erm, nope, I certainly wasn’t expecting this from a catholic bulletin board !!!, are you catholic ??. I do agree with you in part though. I’ve heard a few guys say that they waited and ended up wishing they hadn’t. Thanks for your comment
We are designed, emotionally and spiritually, to mate with one person for life
Blessedtoo – Who says this?, this isn’t the case for most animals?, the males tend to impregnate the female then leave. I’m not proposing we do this but who on earth says we are designed to mate with one person?
-if you’ll sleep with someone you’re not married to, then why would that change after marriage?
Agapewolf – Eh? I don’t get this argument, what is wrong with sleeping with the person I love before / after marriage? ………. Are you implying that if I sleep with my girlfriend before marriage I will be sleeping with other women once married? ……. I do not find that a strong argument. So what If I wait until marriage or not ……. I could still potentially sleep with other women either way?
I don’t want to give myself away to someone until we’ve committed to share our lives with each other forever. I don’t want someone who only wants me for my body and then leaves me if I get pregnant. Besides, if I give myself away to everyone else, what will I have left for my future spouse?
Sanctamaria17 – Hi, why do you assume a guy only wants you for your body? The type of guys who this would apply to are those who will try and get you straight into bed from the word go. I wouldn’t recommend any women went for those types. But surely if a guy hangs around without sex for a few months its fairly obvious he wants more than just sex?. And what on earth do you mean what will you give your future spouse?, are you suggesting the only thing you have to offer a guy is your virginity? …… I’d hope you had a damn sight more than that to give your future husband.

Thanks for all the comments

As someone who is about to become engaged to a wonderful woman, I can totally understand where the OP is coming from. Temptation can seem overwhelming for both of us sometime. Here are strategies I use that help us resist the temptation.
  1. Pray together. The more often the better. While you are praying, your thoughts are going to be moved away from the sinful thoughts that can lead to sex. Mass together every week is a good choice as well.
  2. Never, ever be in a private room together with the door closed. If you or your partner live alone, that means that the particular residence should be avoided as much as possible. It may not be the best reason, but fear of getting caught can help one resist the urge :).
  3. Stay reasonably active. Lots of walks and hikes (granted harder at this time of year) can help keep things under control.
  4. For my part, since I am, obviously the guy :), I promised my GF that I wouldn’t have sex with her until we were married. Even when we are weak, and have strayed farther than we should, I am not going to break that promise to her. What sort of husband would I be if she couldn’t trust my word?
I will finish with some advice a priest gave me in confession regarding this. Being tired, hungry or feeling alone are all points where are resolve weakens. So end the dates reasonably early, eat fairly often (though this has other risks) and open up emotionally to your partner. Those hopefully will help resolve build.
