So, they know that they are being rude or hurtful, then ignore them in your life as much as possible. And, by the way, if they notice this and ask you why, tell them straight up that you find them somewhat toxic and you don’t need that in your life.

I had to do this with my stepmother. She just has a very negative personality and is critical of everyone! I stopped calling her, sending cards and she finally asked why. I tried to be as unhurtful as possible but I pointed out that I had told her to please not be so critical and because I don’t expect nor demand her to change…all I could do was change my end of the relationship. She accepted it. I bet she complained about me to everyone that would listen but that’s ok…I no longer care. Life is too short.

What did Jesus say… One cannot love God and hate their brother.

We are commanded to love and to give respect to everyone, and this includes those with different political views.

There are a trillion things to talk about besides politics. Pick those things. Live at peace with all people

That makes sense. If you can find a topic or topics you both are interested in and can discuss freely and there are no hot buttons about, perhaps you can have some meaningful conversations. If they turn to the stuff that bothers you, you can politely excuse yourself and leave, or steer the conversation away from the hot button issues. If that doesn’t work, at least you’ve tried. Then the advice about limiting your contact comes into play.

There is a book by (Father) John H. Hampsch, CMF called Healing Your Family Tree. It was published by Our Sunday Visitor. It is listed on Amazon (Dec. 1999, which must have been the thrid edition - mine in 1989).

'Tisn’t cheap - Amazon wants $41.95; but if you go on the internet to Claretian Teaching Ministry, they have it for $14.95.

While it is directed to the family tree - i.e. “ancestors”, no one has been hatched, and often problems in the current family have to do with issues of the past.
