I went to Mass in a parish I have never been to before. It was a beautiful church and a wonderful liturgy. I was ready to register as a member until time came to receive the Eucharist.

When I went to receive, the priest gave me a piece of bread that was shaped like a cube. I’ve never seen anything like that before in my 22 years of going to Mass.

Could this bread be licit? I had a feeling that it wasn’t when i received it, but I want to be sure before returning to that parish again.

Thanks!

As long as it was made of unleavened bread and water only, it is fine. It does not have to be the circular shape most of us are used to. Some parishes use thicker bread and it is cut into cubes or squares. To ease your mind, ask the Pastor about it, but there usually is not a problem.

Shape has no bearing. Some parishes make their own bread for Eucharist, and it turns out as you described. As long as it’s wheat and water, no additives, it should be ok.

The Byzantine eastern Catholic churches will give the Eucharist by spoon in the form of a cube of the Precious Body soaked in the Precious Blood.

Thanks! I had no idea there were other kinds of valid and licit hosts other than the wafers. Just to be sure I sent an email to the pastor. Hopefully we’ll find out soon.

They are valid if they are wheat-only bread.

They are valid but still illicit if they are leavened bread.

I hope it’s just a matter of valid & licit bread, but something you simply haven’t seen before.

Asking the pastor about it is the right thing:thumbsup:
