Have you guys been seeing in the news about the Muslims protesting the Pope? Here is an exerpt from a news source:
“The emperor comes to speak about the issue of jihad, holy war,” the pope said. “He said, I quote, 'Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.”’
Benedict did not explicitly agree with the statement nor repudiate it.

Now to me this seems a bit hypocritical considering the crusades, don’t you?

No, not at all, because the purpose of the Crusades, each of them, was to re-take the Holy Land and protect the Christians still there. This is very different than spreading the faith by the sword.

To make a very long story, short. All the Middle East was Christian at one time, and if not for the crusades, Bin Laden might be sipping cognac in Europe today.

Do a search online for Thomas Madden and some of his writings on the crusades. He is an excellent crusade historian and has some short essays online to read about them.
