Hello, I am new and need help. Normally, I would discuss this with my confessor but English is not his first language and on complicated , odd things he doesn’t always have the vocabulary to understand.
What I am concerned with has to do with the paranormal.
For a while I was involved in studying Bigfoot (Sasquatch) because I thought it was a flesh and blood animal. I made many friends in that community and was very active. At some point in my studies I began to believe that Bigfoot was actually a demon. There are many paranormal issues that can be involved with the topic. So, after much prayer, I started backing away from the issue. I did for a while believe that I had a duty to convert/witness to people. One person came to the Lord to a certain degree. Another at least tried to go back to church once. But, that was the extend of what I could accomplish and decided to really just leave the community completely.
One of my old friends called me this week to discuss a paranormal event that occurred on her property that she thinks may or may not be involved with Bigfoot (she has found Bigfoot foot prints on her property and is now seeing orbs). Initially, I was trying to discuss how to scientifically study what is happening to her. How to journal and research the geology and history of the area. Then I told her about some other people who had done podcasts on the exact issue she had been experiencing. I started forwarding her information about all of it until I felt the Holy Spirit tell me not to do so. So, I emailed her and told her to please not investigate further. I told her about two people I know whose lives were ruined investigating this kind of thing. I did not bring up religion because I have done that with her before and it just falls on death ears. I have sent her miraculous medals before and she didn’t really care. But, telling her that people have been hurt doing this type of investigation did impact her and she promised to stop.
I am a convert who was very poorly trained to be a Catholic. I am working very hard to learn and grow as a Catholic. But, I can’t tell if I sinned here or not? Can someone please help me? What would I confess? Thank you and God Bless!!

I am sorry this topic is so weird. But, I really need help. I am afraid that I am in mortal sin but I don’t understand things well enough to know. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Speak with your priest.

He is not only qualified but has the authority to help you.|

You can pray for your friend, have a Mass said for her. Suggest she speak to her local priest.

Bigfoot is most likely a legend and less likely large apes that have been set loose/escaped and have thrived in nature. Don’t give evil the credit for natural things.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with an interest in the supernatural / paranormal. I’m a big fan of cryptids and love learning about them. The stories are always interesting and, while I might doubt that most of them exist, they are certainly intriguing. I especially love the idea of prehistoric creatures that have survived to today; and sea monsters are a favorite topic of mine.

If bigfoot exists, he is an animal that we should learn about.

As for the orbs, those are generally attached to UFO stuff, at least in modern times, though they’ve been around longer than the UFO craze. Most likely there’s a rational explanation for them, but again, there’s nothing wrong with having an interest in them.

The areas of the paranormal you want to avoid are those that involve attempting to summon things, or control supernatural forces. That is not our realm, those are not things we should be dealing with. Stuff like horoscopes, sooth sayers, fortune tellers, palm reading, seances, demon summoning (or angel summoning, for that matter), and the like should be avoided, and participating in them is a sin which needs to be confessed.

If this field of study interests you and you’d like to hear about it from a Catholic standpoint, I highly recommend Jimmy Akin’s Mysterious World. He has podcasts over all kinds of supernatural / conspiratorial stuff, and discuses them all from the standpoints of faith and reason. I think the second or third episode was dedicated to bigfoot.

Thank you for your help. I was trying to get my friend to look at orbs from a scientific perspective since there are natural reasons for such light phenomena. I was afraid that suggesting resources that would discuss Bigfoot and orbs was the sin. But, according to what you are saying there is no inherent sin in that. Thank you!!

1 there’s no such thing as bigfoot.
2. If this hobby interferes with ones spiritual life. Stop.

As a previous poster mentioned, there’s no inherent evil in researching into various topics that interest you.

So long as you maintain that Mother Church is above all else but Jesus and his Father, you should be protected from any evil demons.

As for your friend, if she isn’t religious, you’ll have to simply pray, stand witness to the Power of Mother Church and Jesus and protect her in any was possible.

My local parish has a prayer shawl drive every year. Each is imbued with a blessing and the prayers of the parishioner that knitted them. Perhaps you could give her something like that to ward off demons as she sleeps?

As for waking hours, offering up a rosary to her every so often, light candles for her in your church, have her included in the prayers of the faithful bit of Mass.

Could you try to get your friend to attend a Liturgy outside of Holy Eucharist, namely, Lauds or Evensong?

My church hosts that daily, aside from Sundays, and its a less dogmatic than the Liturgy of the Word portion of Mass.

It takes 20 minutes, you’re in a group, and you can get wrapped up in the process rather than all the (as she may think) “religious mumbo jumbo” she might not be too keen to hear.

Just getting in a church may do her well to detract any sort of work of demons…plus the potential socializing afterwards might help her find an enriching and sacramental community.

Unfortunately, she lives in another state. Fortunately, her mother is religious. I have her mom on the job. Thank you!

I’m Catholic and I like to read about cryptids and UFOs. I have never seen a big foot , but, here in Florida we have the skunk apes and I may have seen one of those. From what I sensed about it’s presence is that it is a supernatural being. What is really weird is that it appeared when I was thinking about searching the woods for the bones of a skunk ape. Yikes. I say supernatural yet they are flesh and blood creatures. I think they have abilities that we have forgotten. If I had time I would go looking for them in the wilderness. Bigfoot creatures are, probably, like humans. They can be kind, gentle, mean, intelligent, wild, civilized, angry, happy, etc… Some witnesses say that skunk apes are usually angry and aggressive. I think they are angry because it is soooo hot, humid, and too many mosquitoes. LOL. I don’t know how they survive without air conditioning?
I see orbs, ghosts, and angels yet I will not go looking for ghosts in haunted buildings or graveyards. They can be menacing and evil and they can cause trouble in your life. It is very difficult to protect yourself spiritually from evil spirits, especially, when you go looking for them. You open yourself up to darkness when you become fascinated by it. Evil darkness can outmaneuver you very quickly.

I have had many UFO sightings, especially, when the space shuttle launches were taking place.

As far as the bigger picture, I think all of these beings are a part of the vast universe we live in. They are God’s creatures. The problem we run into is that it is difficult to discern which ones are evil and which ones are in line with creator God. Discernment requires a lot of rosaries, eucharist, and honesty. If we think of God’s creation on the framework of Jacob’s ladder there are mysteries in the universe and above the universe that are beyond our comprehension. We are near the bottom rung of the ladder and we don’t have enough awareness of the full glory of God’s creation. However, the data is evident that these beings exist and we would be naive to ignore it.

I live in a UFO hotspot, in the hills of West Australia. I saw UFOs and orbs, along with other phenomena, for years. Every single day, for a number of years.
I have hundreds of photos, videos etc. I used to sit out for hours, each night and showed them to various family members who proceeded to FREAK OUT.
I was involved in a contact group and we even had a movie made about us, (Australien Skies). It was all very strange and some felt absolutely “demonic”. Others felt just the opposite and upon reading of Paul on the road to Damascus, I almost fell over as the description was very much like what I was seeing. This lead me to start going to Mass, a year and half ago. I am receiving the Sacraments this Easter.
Since I have been going to Mass, I’ve stopped looking at these UFOs, though I can’t miss them sometimes as they just start flashing away at me. They lead me to accept the Spiritual Realm as very real, but I feel that they are more or less unhealthy. Especially the “fascination” aspect of me sitting outside, watching every night. My advice? Focus on God, but know the Universe is a trip. My life has been immeasurably better since I stopped looking and started going to Mass.

Can you identify what makes you uneasy about UFOs? I get a lot of uneasy responses from relatives and friends. Some friends will not talk to me again. However, I do come in contact with people who believe.
