I have recently told that I will be losing my job. I am very excited by this since for a long time I know I have needed to make a change but it was easy to stay where I was. We have a daughter in catholic school and next year it will need to be 2.

If I do not go back to work, we would need to send our kids to public school, in a great district but the instruction is not as rigorous as our current school. My ODD is an excellent student, but sometimes can get lazy, so I want to keep the pressure on. YDD is a wiz as well and scary smart, almost reading at this point and great at numbers, like scary great.

I could be a SAHM and help out at school, keep involved, etc.

Or get a new job, as soon as possible, keep the kids in Catholic school

OR I am working on starting a home based business. I am very blessed with sewing skills and could have lots of options in that arena. I would need to make enough to cover tuition for 2 kids for a total of around $9000 for the year.

I have no idea which way to focus my attention to make it happen.

Any words of advice from those that who have been there done that?

The past 2 years we have really budgeted and this is what affords me the opportunity to stay home if I want.

Ugh, so many things to think about…

As of right now, I do not have an end day, but will get 30 days notice, 6 months severance and 3 months outplacement services. I have worked since I was 14. NEVER not worked, always had a job… often doing extra on the side. The thought of staying home for a while is VERY tempting, but not at the expense of my children’s education. So many blessings, not sure which road to travel…

Prayers for you… wish it were an easy answer.

I’ve always worked as well… and decided to continue to work to afford Catholic Education for our children. Unfortunately, my husband was recently laid off and we are scraping by right now and seeking financial assistance for the last 2 months of school this year… and praying that he’ll have something again by next fall. We really don’t want to leave the Catholic School… it’s our first priority… but I know everyone’s situation is unique.

Prayers!

i was a SAHM for 27 years. of our ten, we still have littler kids, 5, 9 and 11. these past 3 years ive been back to work full time week with some blessedly flexible hours.

i LOVE my job. absolutely LOVE my job. I thank God for it every day.

i still liked being home better.

i think kids do well in any decent school so long as their parents are vigilant and involved.

My husband is so supportive.

He supports whatever solution. He is not as wary of the public schools as I am, this is the school district he went to. Paying for Catholic high school is well outside of our budget, so that is not on the table (it would be over $10,000 per child!) So he doesn’t see the big deal going to public school since they will eventually be there anyway. IF I wanted to stay home.

If I went back to work right away, it would be business as usual.

I did find out that I could Substitute teach in our school and the other schools around. So that would bring in income as well.

I am praying that the path will be revealed to me soon so that I can make the plans necessary.

Thank you for you prayers and information!

There is another option too. You could still be a SAHM and your kids can go to Catholic School. Of course, look at your budget and see if you can make cuts, but also ask the school about financial support. There are programs out there and since your children are already in the school it might be easier. Explain your job loss situation and your concerns about affordability of the school and see if they can help you or point you in the right direction. Maybe you can substitute for the Catholic School on a voluntary basis as a form of compensation too. Or offer your sewing skills as well.

I used to be a ‘home teacher’ for the county. Kids who are temporarily out of school for physical, social, emotional, or behavioral reasons are allowed 6 hours/ week with a home teacher. I went to their homes and worked with them. A parent was there at all times. Most of the kids I had were great to work with.

The pay was good and I chose what days & hours I would tutor. I loved it! 👍

It was officially called “Home and Hospital Teaching”, though I never went to a hospital.

What are the Catholic schools like in your area? In most of the schools in Wisconsin it is policy to never deny a child a Catholic education regardless of the ability to pay.

We get financial aid to the tune of around $9000 every year for three children in school. We will have four next year. Catholic schools are very willing to work with you provided you are willing to work with them.

DO NOT put your kids in public school if you can help it. The damage done to them emotionally and spiritually is virtually impossible to fix until they are young adults. I was a CCD teacher who taught public school kids.

You have been warned.

the public schools by you must be horrible for you to express such strong sentiment.

i think it’s unfair to designate all public schools to one of Dante’s seven levels of hell. same as it’s unwise to presume your child is learning solid faith and morals in every Catholic school.

parents should be careful to gather the facts about the schools available to them. and parents should know that kids do better-- a LOT better- when their parents are vigilant and proactive.

i think*** that’s*** a better warning.

My vote? SAH and homeschool. 👍

We don’t get votes, though.

Prayers as you make your decision.

the other monica (me) likes this idea, too. the OP is an educator already!!! AND she could teach those kids how to sew. AND give sewing lessons to kids in the homeschool group and make a few bucks.

It is impossible to make such a blanket statement about public school. They vary so much as do Catholic schools for that matter. I had friends pull their kids out of a Catholic school because a seminarian speaking to the 7th grade class told them he masturbated to handle his sexual urges and he was not reprimanded after it was brought to administrator attention. There was also a major problem with hazing at a Catholic high school in our area. Our public schools are awesome though!

If it were me, I would get together tuition for next school year, take advantage of the 6 months severance, and keep the kids where they are while giving a go at the sewing opportunity. It sounds so exciting! You would have until next year at about this time to figure out if it would be enough to pay your kids tuition. The flexibility would be great for your kids.
