“Don’t sweat the small stuff,” is one of those phrases that sound helpful but really aren’t. Prudential judgement is a skill that is developed over time. Each person has to learn how to discern what issues are important and how urgently they need to be dealt with. The important thing is to not allow these things to make you anxious. That’s the “sweat” that should be avoided. For a lot of people, good time management is very helpful in avoiding the “sweat”. The “stuff” will still be there, but having good management skills help make the “stuff” less “sweaty”. When we’re teaching our elementary kids about time management, we teach them to consider two continuums, importance and urgency. Things that are the most important and urgent have to be dealt with right away. Things that are important, but not as urgent should be dealt with second, so as to avoid them becoming urgent and causing “sweat”. Things that are not important, but urgent should be covered third. And the things that are unimportant and not urgent should be done last, if at all.
