Great point. Some priests also wear long robes with no pants.
Look at the date and geographical source of the letter from Cardinal Siri.
1960
Genoa, Italy
Hot pants were the rage in the early 1970s having found great popularity years earlier among European prostitutes. Hot pants were the successor to the miniskirt, succeeding in showing more leg, more cheek and more attitude than had been previously displayed.
While very popular among many young women (and most young men,) they were frowned upon in the workplace as well as in many social arenas (a number of prominent restaurants forbade them from being worn by patrons.) Some businesses took full advantage of the fad (notably Allegheny airlines, even made them a part of the company uniform.)
and this
Much like the afro was to Black males, the miniskirt was for women, a tool of rebellion. Wearing a hemline at mid-thigh, these women sneered at the social rules put in place by the “wholesome” members of society and decided they would dress as they liked.
The height of the miniskirts popularity was around 1967, when it was practically the only type of skirt being sold to young women. At this time, when many young people were “letting it all hang out,” women had grown tired of having to act proper and demure and sought to have the world appreciate them on their terms.
It is likely that Cardinal Siri was witnessing alarming fashion trends in Europe…these fashion trends then trickled around the world to developed countries. Cardinal Siri was on the mark in describing a problem of his time. Unfortunately fashions trends for young women are worse today …not better. Women need to wisen up and cover up from gaping eyes.

Ohhh yeah, then I totally agree with you. I also dress for the cold and I have to admit that while I wear tights in the winter with skirts, it just doesn’t cut it sometimes here in the cccccold north east. .
Nope those so called things they call tights do NOT do anything to keep your legs somewhat warm in our lovely winter weather…that is why I wear pants

jrabs:
But don’t you feel completely different feminine when you have a great dress on or go to an event wearing a nice skirt. .
Yes and I do also when I wear pants …in most cases though when I wear a skirt or a sari when we go out the only thing I can think of is getting home and taking it off along with the panty hose! But in the summer I do have to say that I wear dresses more often…but then I am one of those that do not wear panty hose in the Summer…🙂

My boys do treat me differently when I have a skirt on then when I am wearing everyday pants
MY two sons and my husband treat me no differently if I wam wearing a skirt/dress or pants.
they have been taught to treat all people with respect no matter the color of their skin , their religion or what they do or do not wear!
Agreed! I** hate dresses and skirts i ESPECIALLY hate panty hose**. they make my tooshy itch. Besides I often think that a classy pants suit in a business meeting makes a better statement than some frumpy old dress.
Totally agree!
👍

Knit tights? Knit cable tights?Try taller boots and a longer skirt…that will cut down on the draft.

Done that…knit tights (like little girls wear) and taller boots (horse riding boots)…still does not help…that nasty wind just whips around you and creeps up your skirt or dress and then …YIKES!
**I do wear my lovely knit tights with my jeans/pants and let me tell you I am toasty warm 😃 **

A good long coat will fix that skirt movement. If I resort to my long wool coat then I don’t bother with a dress…I will wear pants…**

Ahhh wish I could! The demands of single parenting two boys keeps me too busy. Always wanted to learn how to knit.
Hey, we could get together and let the boys play and we can learn to knit while they amuse themselves?!

I really can’t knit or crochet…but I have been known to buy leg warmers to tuck in tall boots…run the leg warmers right up past the boot tops…very comfy cozy.

Another thought …women might consider wearing corduroy and wool skirts during colder months of the year. Not only are these fabrics extremely warm and resistant to wind…the fabric is heavier and more rigid…it stays put when the north wind blows.

I daresay it’s colder where I live than where most of you ladies are;
Even in pants, a person feels cold when it is below zero. I haven’t worn pants (except for exercise) in a couple of years. I think the cold is a lame excuse; women wore skirts for hundreds of years, even in very cold climates.
I usually wear long skirts in the winter, with boots and tights and a long wool coat. I’m usually comfortable. When I’m cold, I offer it up.
This is a protestant site, but I like some of their articles:
ladiesagainstfeminism.com/
One point they make is that feminine, modest dress need not be frumpy; that it is more womanly to wear something beautiful than a frumpy “sack”.

What?!?

The North wind doth blow
and we shall have snow,
and what will the poor robin do then,
poor thing.
He’ll sit a barn
and keep himself warm
and hide his head under his wing,
poor thing.

Jrabs and I are from your town.
Did you hear and feel that wind whip today?
There is a wind chill advisory tonight.
You will need your long johns, tights, legwarmers and boots under your skirt tonight.

I can see at a glance that this website has some good thoughts. I must say though you don’t have to look like a 18th or 19th century woman to be modest. Classic stores we all know and use ( such as JCPenney ) offer many attractive affordable outfits for younger and older women who want to be stylish, femine and modest.

I’m finding this thread very interesting, because I am a college freshman who attended 12 years of Catholic school. So this is my first year not wearing a plaid skirt and tights every day!

I do wear jeans quite a bit, and so does everyone else- but I make sure I look feminine & modest at the same time. I only wear sweats/lounge clothes if I’m hanging in my dorm room studying, generally. Jeans/khakis/cords and a pretty sweater are what I’ve been wearing as it gets colder…I love dresses and skirts but need to get some for the colder months. I love dressing like a girl!

Although sometimes a T-shirt and sweats are what I end up wearing to class if I hit the snooze button eight times that morning. 😃

I have children your age…so I know where you are coming from…they fill me in.
Stay beautiful. Stay modest. The rewards are great.

It is not a sin for a woman to wear a tasteful suit to work, but it DOES affect the way she is viewed by others as well as the way she views herself. The same thing could be said for gothic attire. It is not inherently sinful, but it surely changes the way people view you and is a reflection of who you are. If you cannot admit that you would view a goth differently than someone dressed in standard clothing, then you are either deceiving yourself or are being rather naive. After all, people choose how they dress, and they should be aware of how people react.

One problem with the bishop article is that it came too late. I have no problems with it in principle, but it would now be impractical for women to forgo pants. What I would suggest is to make sure that what you wear is 1) modest, and 2) feminine. The same goes for short hair. Women with “man hair” do affect the way they are viewed by others.

There is a distinct difference between men and women that goes beyond physiology. There are entirely different mindsets, and this is how it should be.

Women should not wear men’s dresses.–nicolo
Unless they are Scottish or Irish, which are the only men’s dresses that come immediately to mind.

A woman can wear pants for a good reason, ie playing in a park with her family. The point is that too many pants MADE today by companies are made too tight and too low. Too many pants are see-through. THere is nothing wrong with pants, it is the intention behind wearing them that is the problem.Beisdes, wearing a think velvet skirt and tights or tight pants underneath (like long-johns) and a pair of boots and a good shirt, that’ll keep you warm. How do you think women back in the old days survived cold winters before heaters and such even existed?
