Hello. The controversy regarding the invitation from NDU to the present POTUS is escalating as is the dilemma of many of this year’s Graduates as whether to attend their own graduation ceremonies, or not.

Several Student groups on campus have come together to try to resolve the issue of an appropriate response on their part in light of this situation.

They have asked they be allowed to resolve the issue themselves. They do not want an undignified display of protest, but want to make their opinions known as to their dislike of having the present POTUS, in light of his pro abortion stance, giving their commencement address.

They are asking everyone’s support in prayer.

May God bless all of them for standing up for the Catholic Church.

:clapping:That’s just awesome! 👍

God Bless them and their families. :highprayer:

May God in His great love, give these young people the strength to stand for their convictions and support for the teachings of the Catholic Church.

May they know in their hearts and souls the support of Faithful Catholics everywhere.

They are in the front line of opposition to this society’s culture of death. May Mother Mary shed her light on these faithful few, protecting them and caring for them as she cares for all who are faithful to the Sacred Heart of her Son, Jesus…

Hail Mary,
Full of Grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit
of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of death.

Amen.

You may also wish to post this in the Prayer Intentions section of the forum to get even more prayers.

Isn’t it totally ironic that a student body looking for a commencement speaker to be the guide to their future endeavors ends up being the guide for themselves?

These seniors were trained to be leaders at Notre Dame and now they will be leading the University and many Catholics because Father Jenkins made a very bad choice. God works in mysterious ways.

They may sacrifice going to their own graduation ceremonies but great statements are made by great sacrifices. Their families should be extremely proud of them and, hopefully, will stand behind these seniors.

I believe that tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of Catholics are praying for ND students and workers because of this scandal.

No matter what the graduates decide to do in response to Obama being honored with a platform to speak and with an honorary law degree, I encourage you to do so with a prayerful spirit.

If you decide to barrage the university leaders, the Vatican, or the media with your letters of protest, end them with “Our Lady, pray for us.”

If you decide to attend the commencement and then to stand during Obama’s speech with your backs toward him, then whip out your rosaries and pray with your eyes closed as you do so.

If you decide to attend the commencement and then get up to leave as he begins to speak, or as he receives the law degree from President Jenkins, then recite the “Hail Mary” together, as you leave, and continue praying out loud, with no other gestures of protest, even as you’re arrested by the Secret Service and other so-called law enforcement officials. One prayer can be one of thanks, that you’ll have a story about living your faith to share with your children and grandchildren.

If you decide not to attend the commencement, do not tell the administration in advance that you don’t plan to attend, do not give any of your seat tickets away to other graduates or guests, and convene elsewhere to pray and to celebrate your hard-earned accomplishments together.

Above all things, discern in prayer what is right, and pray with thanksgiving and praise. Remember that this is all about honoring our Lord and that we cannot serve two masters.

Be assured of my prayer. As someone who suffered under the 2001 commencement when President Bush was chosen to be there, I definitely sympathize with your predicament. To say that my commencement was ruined might perhaps be an overstatement, but as a lifelong faithful Catholic I’ve never been more ashamed of ND then I was then (including this year).

I am truly sorry you had to experience such an unpleasant performance by some of the students. This WAS when a number of them turned their backs on President Bush?

No. The embarrassment was having President Bush honored. Those who turned their backs were prophetically courageous. I wish, now, I had known enough at the time to join them.

Was this protest in regard to the War in Iraq?

For the unborn, for the Notre Dame 2009 graduates standing up to defend the unborn, and for the conversion of President Obama:

Hail Mary,
Full of Grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit
of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.

Notre Dame’s Pro Life students are asking for everyone to send red envelopes to be given to Jenkins to be passed on to Obama.

My sense is that all who don’t yet see the great harm in having President Obama at Notre Dame will also, someday, wish they would have.

Thank you.

Unfortunately, the link you provided was only for those who opposed ND’s actions. In the interest–as you note–of letting them resolve the issue themselves, those are so interested should also be given the opportunity to express support. I think those who are most affected should be given the catholic option to form their own conscience and act accordingly.

I am heartened to note that there are relatively few signers of this petition.

I’m not surprised, as the petition itself doesn’t strike me as very well-thought out. For instance:
Petition:
As an American proud of our nation’s tradition of civil dialogue and religious pluralism, I stand with Notre Dame President Fr. John Jenkins and his decision to invite President Barack Obama to speak at the 2009 graduation commencement.
Why would it follow that someone proud of civil dialogue and religious pluralism would want President Obama to speak at Notre Dame and receive an award? The abortion issue (and others. . . “gay rights” for instance) isn’t an issue of religious pluralism, but rather bad ethics. And President Obama’s invitation doesn’t seem to involve him engaging in any dialogue with the University.

Likewise:
Petition:
For decades, presidents of both political parties have been invited to Notre Dame for this occasion to engage in rigorous discourse about the most pressing issues of our day.
I wasn’t aware that President Obama would be engaging in any rigorous discourse.

So the conclusion that
Petition:
Through this invitation, Fr. Jenkins is honoring the best of our nation’s democratic and religious values.
Seems a bit disingenuous, or at least unperceptive.
