Because St. Romain didn’t defeat an angel with a watering can, he defeated a water spitting monster.Somehow, when the gargoyles dominate all the top positions, I don’t read ‘defeat’ of evil. Why not 5,000 (good) angels instead of 5,000 gargoyles? They could be holding watering cans for the ‘water spouts’.![]()
And the pinnacle of the Cathedral was the cross, THAT was what was in the top position, directly over the transcept. So the cross defeats any multitude of evil creatures, all that is evil is subjected to the Cross.
Or should it only be angels that are subject to the Cross?
personally, I am quite comfortable with the thought that the three Archbishops who had a hand in the construction of the Cathedral of Notre Dame du Paris, understood and approved the theology represented in the art. The same can be said for all the subsequent Archbishops who incorporated grotesques (the true architectural term) into their Cathedrals modeled after Paris.
If so many bishops approved and even collaborated with such art over the course of multiple centuries, why should you or I gainsay them?
