If the University of Notre Dame refuses to rescind its invitation, perhaps it can be persuaded to amend it: invite President Obama to debate his pro-abortion-rights philosophy against Professor Mary Ann Glendon. Now that would be a great service to the Truth: for (as Lincoln said about slavery), abortion “is an evil, and an evil cannot bear being discussed.” Alternatively, perhaps the University would at least be willing to print a conspicuous disclaimer in all of its graduation programs, saying something like, “The University’s invitation to President Obama to be its commencement speaker and its conferral on him of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree should in no way be taken as an endorsement–and is emphatically not an endorsement–of the President’s well-known position and actions favoring a purported ‘right’ to abortion.”

Although a disclaimer would be an imperfect compromise, it would at least constitute an effort to comply with the Bishops’ 2004 directive not to honor pro-abortion officials in a way suggesting support for their actions.

The disclaimer is not a bad idea. I like it. It would actually make two statements at the same time.
  1. Catholics have a moral position that is not negotiable.
  2. Catholics can have their moral position and also show respect for the highest office in the land without dividing.
Number 2 is than others do, since people seem to think that they either have to bend or attack. This would show that Catholics don’t do either. But we stand by our moral principals and at the same time are honest citizens.

I really like your idea. Send it to ND. 👍

Fraternally,

JR 🙂
