NOTW Styles

I got into a discussion about the NOTW (Not of this World) clothing styles with my girlfriend. I told her that the clothing styles just don’t seem Christian to me. They all have this gothic look and feel to them. I really don’t have any good reasons for thinking it. I told her that if Jesus was alive today that I couldn’t see him wearing that type of clothing. To me if your going to try to send a Christian message through your clothing you would think really hard about the style you would choose. And I think there are certain styles out there that do give people a feeling. Like a feeling of warmth or kindness. Of despair and suffering. Of laughter. Some clothing is meant to be provacative and scandalous.

Is there any Bible passages or articles that talk about this kind of thing?

What do you guys think? Do you get the same feeling when you see clothing like that? Or am I crazy for thinking this way about this type of clothing?

Personally, I like the clothes. While you may get a feeling of depression or angst, others do not necessarily. I for one don’t. The clothes make me think of a style that’s tough, a little in your face, young and alternative. All cliches, I’ll grant you, but it’s what I think of. I don’t think of these things as automatically negative, though I know some who do.

I’ve always thought that was something great about Christianity. There are a thousand different ways of expressing it, and as long as people are dressed nicely for Mass (and ‘nicely’ is not a t-shirt in our society, but hey! they have button-ups!) how they express their faith isn’t an issue. These types of clothing (Romanticcatholic.com is similar) are at the core, I think, of the my generation’s means of ‘being in the world and not of it’. These allow us to fit in while standing out.

I like some of their stuff too…not all of the designs are my taste, though.
I try to go to as many concerts as I can and it’s nice to have Christian graphic tees to wear, and I own a few with really good messages on them and tasteful, modern designs. But if you don’t like them, no worries, fads change every few years anyway.
