Nova et Vetera Breviary or Diurnale Romanum

Hello!
I’m looking at buying the Diurnale Romanum or the full Nova et Vetera breviary. Does anyone have either of these books? I would appreciate any opinions or (name removed by moderator)ut that you all have about them. The Diurnal is cheaper but I have heard the quality isn’t as good as the Nova et Vetera breviary.

It depends on what “hours” you want to pray. The Diurnal has only the daytime hours (lauds, prime, terce, sext, none, vespers, and compline), while the other one has all of those and the hour of Matins which is very long. I personally don’t have either but I was able to get a 3 volume Latin English version off of Ebay, but only used to say the hours that would be in the diurnal but this week in fact I started praying Matins. The Diurnal is a great thing to start off with. The prayers are exactly the same as the other one its just missing Matins (which is very long and explains why it needs to have 2 volumes). But if your like me and one day want to pray matins then I would make the investment now and buy the more expensive 2 volume set.

Sorry to jump in late on this thread.

I have the Diurnale Romanum and love it. The complaints I’ve heard about the NeV is that the binding isn’t all that great. It can start to fall apart.

The DR is solid (hardcover) and a steal for the price. It feels very official, has a lot of neat extras (Sacrosancte, Benedictus, and Magnificat on harder paper stock in the front of the book connected to the binding). The book is very easy to use. If you don’t think you will be praying the heavy office of Matins, then this is a no-brainer. Save your cash and buy the 1962DR.

If I were looking at getting the DR, I’d strongly consider the newly-released pocket-sized version released by the Abbey of Le Barroux (shown below on the right):

Be aware, both the titles you mentioned are in Latin-only. If you are looking for a Latin/English version,your options are the Monastic Diurnal, the abbreviated Angelus Press Divinum Officium, or holding out for Baronius Press’s second printing of the Breviary.
