I know that a novena is typically a prayer prayed once a day for nine days, but that it is sometimes also prayed once an hour for nine hours in a single day. What about a prayer prayed back-to-back nine times within a single hour? Is that still considered a novena? Is there a spiritual benefit to praying a novena more spread out instead of back-to-back?

I’m interested in Padre Pio’s Efficacious Novena. I understand he prayed this daily. Was that hourly over 9 hours, or once a day? Anyone knowledgeable about Padre Pio out there?

I can only speak for myself, but a prayer said nine times over nine hours or nine days is different than saying it nine times in a row.

I agree. Saying it nine times back to back sounds like casting a spell or being superstitious.

i think the difference is in the intent. The rosary is not a novena.

Once a day, I don’t know why it has been called a novena implying it is said over nine days.

All prayer is powerful. St Pio was very close to God but that relationship was built through humility and charity and love that we are all capable of. I try to pray from the heart as much as possible and many times a day, why would you not communicate and thank God as you live your life, that way we stay close.

Thanks, yes, it being called a novena is what I was hoping to clarify.

Yes… I do that… seems like you’re implying I don’t? My prayers aren’t limited to novenas, only this question was.

There’s a story about St Teresa of Calcutta, that one day in an extremely urgent situation, she (and her sisters) prayed a quick “novena” of Memorares to ask the Blessed Mother’s rapid assistance.

God answered her prayer as they requested. 😄
