Novena Question

I have a book with lots of novenas in it and it also has the dates of the particular feasts and such and when you can start the novena so it follows the feast date (if there is one). But my question is, do you have to do a particular novena at a particular time (i.e. the novena to the Sacred Heart having to coincide with the feast of the Sacred Heart) or can you do any novena any time? I got to thinking about this last night and was too tired to get back on the forums:p so I thought I’d ask today. Thanks!
 
If there is a novena for a specific feast, season, or saint, then I think it’s nice to “time” it appropriately, but I don’t think you have to. For example, I did a Lenten one, and just finished an Easter one. I just started one to St. Joseph (my DH is looking for work, so that’s my special intention) even though his feast days aren’t happening anytime very soon.

When it comes to praying, there’s not just one right way. God knows our hearts and intentions, and that’s what’s important. Hope that helps! 🙂

Yes it does. Thanks. That’s what I was thinking because I just finished the Divine Mercy Novena and it said that you could pray it anytime but it was good to pray it on the requested days from Good Friday to Holy Saturday. Thanks for clearing it up on the other ones.

I just felt a strong urge to pray a novena for some various intentions but wasn’t sure if it was ok to do it anytime or not. Thanks again!

I prayed the Divine Mercy novena too – isn’t it beautiful?! 😃

If you’re feeling a strong urge to pray for specific reasons, maybe it’s the Holy Spirit prompting you? Like I said, praying is always good!!

As Belle as told you, sometimes the Holy Spirit is moving you to say a particular novena. But unless you are saying a novena in preparation for a feast day where there are stipulated days or number of days on which to say it, you can say them any time for your intentions.

Also, the prayer doesn’t have to be named as a novena. There are some prayers specifically noted as Novenas to the Sacred Heart, Our Lady or the saints. But if you have a need, you can do your own form of novena - be it three-day, nine-day, thirty-day - even the nine-consecutive-hour novena to the Infant of Prague (one day only - and very powerful).
