This is posted in the prayer intentions forum, but I feel that it is so important that it needs to be posted it here too. I received this in an email and I encourage you to copy and send out to your family and friends as soon as possible too so that they too can join in the fast and Novena to stop FOCA and this is for all Christians.

Novena request start Jan.11

If you are opposed to abortion then there is bad news on the horizon. For those of you who do not know, the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) is set to be signed if congress passes it on January 21-22 of 2009. The FOCA is the next sick chapter in the book of abortion. If made a law then all limitations on abortion will be lifted which will result in the following:
Code:
        1) All hospitals, including Catholic hospitals will be required to perform abortions upon request. If this happens Bishops vow to close down all Catholic hospitals, more then 30% of all hospitals in the United States.

        2) Partial birth abortions would be legal and have no limitations.

        3) All U.S. tax payers would be funding abortions.

        4) Parental notification will no longer be required.

        5) The number of abortions will increase by a minimum of 100,000 annually.

Perhaps most importantly, the government will now have control in the issue of abortion. This could result in a future amendment that would force women by law to have abortions in certain situations (rape, down syndrome babies, etc) and could even regulate how many children women are allowed to have.

Needless to say this information is disturbing, but sadly true. As Catholics, as Christians, as anyone who is against the needless killing of innocent children, we must stand as one. We must stop this horrific act before it becomes a law.
The Plan :
Code:
To say a novena ( 9 days of prayer ) along with fasting starting on January 11th. For Catholics, the prayer of choice will be the rosary with intentions to stop the FOCA. For non Catholics, I encourage you to pray your strongest prayers with the same intentions, also for nine consecutive days. The hope is that this will branch and blossom as to become a global effort with maximum impact. We have very little time so we all must act fast. Just do three things:

        1) Pass this letter to 5 or more people

        2) Do it in three days or less

        3) Start the novena on January 11th and pray for nine consecutive days. (please also fast for at least two days during the novena)

**Remember that with God all things are possible and the power of prayer is undeniable. If you are against the senseless killing of defenseless children then the time is now to do something about it!**
May God bless you all!!:signofcross: :crossrc:

👍 Started last night. If anyone missed it, it’s never too late to jump in! We need all the prayers we can get to keep this putrid law out of our country!

Day Two. Please join in and let us know. As CatholicSam said, it is not too late to join in.

Sigh. The fact that all our pro-life progress is being threatened makes me sick. Literally. With the abortion aspects aside, the shutting down of our Catholic hospitals would be a nightmare as well. I’m praying.

Not all of this information is correct. You still won’t agree with all of it but it’s not as bad as you think it is. I found the following information by quick internet searches.

Would FOCA force Catholic hospitals to perform abortions?
Code:
Unequivocally no, says Jill Morrison, senior counsel at the National Women's Law Center. Federal conscience clause law, such as the Church Amendment, states that simply receiving public funding does not turn a hospital into a "state actor," Morrison explains. "FOCA must be read consistently with existing federal law, unless the new law explicitly provides that it is intended to repeal existing law."
Morrison adds, “A hospital is not a state actor, and cannot be magically transformed into one due to its getting Federal funding, as set forth in the Church Amendment.”
Code:
        2) Partial birth abortions would be legal and have no limitations.
The Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003 currently prohibits partial-birth abortions in the U.S. Even If FOCA overrode this law, its wording prohibits restrictions on abortion “prior to fetal viability” and “after fetal viability when necessary to protect the life or health of the mother,” so it could therefore be interpreted as not prohibiting restrictions on partial-birth abortions after the point of fetal viability when the health of the mother is not an issue.
Code:
        3) All U.S. tax payers would be funding abortions.
OCA contains no provisions for direct federal (or other governmental) funding of abortions, and the 1976 Hyde Amendment currently prohibits the use of any federal Medicaid funds to cover the costs of abortions.
Code:
        4) Parental notification will no longer be required.
This statement is accurate. A plausible result of FOCA would be the overriding of laws requiring parental notification for abortions performed on minors.
Code:
        5) The number of abortions will increase by a minimum of 100,000 annually.
Opponents claim that removing current restrictions on abortion (such as parental notification requirements and bans on partial-birth abortions) would result in a significant increase in the abortion rate. Proponents maintain that FOCA would primarily serve to protect rights already place by serving as a bulwark against the imposition of additional restrictions on abortion (or the overturning of Roe v. Wade) and would therefore likely not result in a significant increase in the abortion rate.
Code:

The statement is unfounded. Remember, we still live in a free country. FOCA itself contains no provisions for “forcing women by law to have abortions in certain situations,” and it specifically states that “every woman has the fundamental right to choose to bear a child.” **

We should be wary of legal interpretations and explanations. They are often selective in the bits of information that they communicate and, therefore, present the picture they want to present. Anyone interested might want to google the following very informative article: “Radical Attempt to Prematurely End Debate Over Abortion,” by Denise M. Burke, AUL Vice President of Legal Affairs, AUL is Americans United for Life.
I’m starting late; but I will definitely join the novena. And, so long as I am able, I will be marching in Washington, DC on 1/22.
[SIGN]How about it? Everyone who can, find a bus and come on down! Say lots of rosaries while you’re there![/SIGN]

It is sad how our Church is pitting herself against this email and novena. Pray for our bishops and Richard Doerflinger, too. How is he so sure that “there is no possibility of FOCA being passed this month” or that it is “very strange” “that women could be forced to undergo abortions”? His statements are misleading, not this FOCA novena email!

Of course, no one knows for sure when FOCA will be brought to a vote. However, aside from that one point, the article you have cited is most informative and worth our consideration.
I am confident that the bishops are strongly pro-life. As for the novena – perhaps we will have time for many novenas before the FOCA .vote. All the better!!! 👍

The reality is that Obama promised to sign this as soon as he was sworn in as president. I assume he was telling the truth and will sign it as soon as he gets the opportunity, whether it’s this month or next year.

No, it won’t allow the government to force abortions on people, but it is incrimentally changing the laws and moving in that direction. Thankfully we’re not there… yet. But with more abortion in the land come more hardened hearts and people are desensitized to the sheer evil of abortion. It is said that in China many people view going for an abortion on the same level as getting a flu shot or going to the dentist. 😦 So yes, this bill is, in a way, paving the road to government population control in the US.

Hi noclevername,
I tried to get the quotes from within the original text that I included but was unable to. I sent your reply to www.priestforlife.org or Fr. Frank Pavone and this is the reply I received from one of his workers. They did address numbers 1 through 5 and you have to go back to the original text to refresh your memory.

Dear Nana3,

Fr. Frank is very grateful for your letter and has asked me to respond.

Please read the FOCA Fact Sheet produced by the USCCB at usccb.org/prolife/issues/FOCA/FOCA_FactSheet08.pdf. Since that page sometimes has problems loading, however, I’m going to include answers to each of your questions.
  1. FOCA does not explicitly require facilities with a conscientious objection to perform abortions. Roe cited the AMA resolution that no “physician, hospital, nor hospital personnel” shall be required to violate “personally-held moral principles.” The current version of FOCA contains no language of this intent, whereas earlier versions did. FOCA bars laws that protect the right of conscientious objection. It is assumed, then, that hospitals will be required to perform abortions.
  2. FOCA will require states to allow “partial-birth” and other late-term abortions. It is specifically intended by its sponsors to invalidate the ban on partial-birth abortions.
  3. FOCA will require taxpayers to pay for abortions. According to FOCA, the government may not discriminate against abortion in publicly funded programs.
  4. Parental notification will not be required under FOCA.
  5. This statement requires speculation. The consensus about those in the pro-life movement is that FOCA will cause an increase in abortions.
Thank you for your prayers and efforts to end abortion.

Please continue to keep in contact with us so that we may work together to build a culture of life. Be assured of our prayers.

A message of hope from Fr. Corapi:

As we prepare to enter a new era in politics and perhaps society in general, keep something in mind: WE WIN! No matter what political party is in power at a given point in time, in the end those that remain faithful to Jesus Christ win the war. We may have to fight many battles outnumbered and even despised and looked upon as criminals and outcasts by a society that is unraveling and degenerating into something no one could have imagined.
What matters is that we run the race to the finish line and fight the good fight. Don’t “go with the flow,” for as the great Archbishop Fulton Sheen reminds us, “Dead bodies float downstream.” More than ever we shall have to be strong in the faith. Regular and worthy reception of the sacraments, constant prayer, and rigorous study of the faith is now essential, not merely a luxury.
The front line and primary battle is going to be the fight for life: the dignity of every human life from the moment of conception to the last moment of natural life. If we lose that one, every other battle space will be compromised. If the government succeeds in establishing abortion as an inalienable “right”, then the elderly and sick will be next. It will then be a short and slippery step to the government deciding who lives and dies regardless of their inherent human dignity.
If you don’t already pray the Rosary every day, please start at once. The prayer of the holy Rosary is the prayer of the holy Gospel, and that means it is the prayer of the Good News Who is Jesus Christ, the LIFE of the world. Many saints will be forged in the crucible of the coming years. Make sure you are among them.

God bless you,

Fr. John Corapi
