Whats a novena? I heard it was a special prayer in which basically whatever you asked would be granted. Anyone care for some insight, how to pray them, what they really are etc

The word novena means nine. Novenas are prayers said over nine days, ala the Apostles and disciples awaiting the day of Pentecost in which they prayed for nine days prior to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, cf. Acts 1.

Novenas don’t automatically grant you your wishes, like a superstition. They very often are answered positively because the person is praying for something that does not violate God’s will, such as the conversion of a loved one and that sort of thing.

You will find several novenas asking the intercession of nearly every saint on the internet. The saints invoked are those who are the patrons of whatever the problem is or the solution, such as praying for those struggling with a mental problem one would make a novena, as it called, to St. Dymphna, because she is the patron saint of those with that affliction.

For more precise and detailed information on this topic go here: Novena.

Does anyone know a good novena to pray for discernment of God’s will?

Prayer For Resignation
To God’s Will

Lord, if what I seek be according to our will,
then let it come to pass
and let success attend the outcome.
But if not, my God,
let it not come to pass.
Do not leave me to my own devices,
for you know how unwise I can be.
Keep me safe under your protection Lord my God,
and in your own gentle way guide me
and rule me as you know best. Amen.

What would a Novena or even just a simply prayer for conversion of a loved one be?

St Monica is the patron saint of those praying for the convesion of loved ones, as her steadfast prayers over many many years led to the conversions of her husband and her son (who went on to become St Augustine) - do a google search for prayers or novenas to her.

In addition to the excellent information already posted, there is also something called a “perpetual novena” which is the novena prayers recited every week. For example, at my parish, Wednesdays is the novena to OL Perpetual Help and Tuesdays is the Novena to St. Anthony.

(P.S. The link above is the version used at my parish but I’ve seen many other novena prayers to OL Perpetual Help)
