Should we pray novenas everyday? Which ones should we be praying most.? What about chaplets? Are those to be prayed daily as well? I try to pray the Rosary everyday, but should I be trying to also pray the Sacred Heart Novena and the Novena to the immaculate heart? What about the Devine Mercy Chaplet? Our Lady said to pray much and I’m trying to set a pattern, but get confused as to which of these prayers I should focus on most.

if you’re compelled to pray more often to develope a habit of prayer then I suggest you try the following…

Pray the rosary each day. Also, pray three hours of the divine office: Lauds, Vespers, and Compline. You can pray the divine office from an app on your phone called iBreviary, it is available on both apple and android devices. Pax Christi!

It’s really up to you, to decide what to do and how to pray–which Novenas you want to pray, and which Chaplets to pray, too. There isn’t anything that’s right or wrong to pray, or no right or wrong way to pray, either. It just depends on what prayers and devotions you’re personally drawn to praying.

Most Novenas are said for nine days in a row.

I know that for myself, if I try to do too much at once, I start to feel overwhelmed with trying to keep up with everything, and then I tend to put everything off, and then nothing gets done. That’s how it gets to be for me, personally.

So for me, I’m better off just trying to focus on one small thing at one time, and then I don’t personally feel so overwhelmed. 🙂

The Divine Office is known as the Liturgy of the Hours. There are seven parts known as hours. None take more than 10 minutes to pray.

I have some permanent prayers I keep in my routine, but I cycle through others. I might try harder to do a daily rosary in May or October, or go out of my way to do a Precious Blood Chaplet in July and November. If I’m in the car at 3:00, I’ll tune over to a Divine Mercy chaplet on the radio. When I had a morning commute, I’d do the St. Michael Chaplet.

If I try to do everything all the time, I stop paying attention, or I do it out of habit, or whatever. If I just try to focus on doing a couple of things nicely, I don’t always succeed— but I don’t burn out.

I don’t think they are literally three ‘hour long’ prayers. The Divine Office is made up of seven ‘divisions of the day’ (used to be nine) called "hours’, but the prayers said after the revamping a couple of decades ago don’t last anywhere near an hour! A lot of people say the ‘hours’ of Vespers (Evening Prayer) and Morning Prayer (used to be Matins), Night Prayer (Compline) is super short. The magazine Magnificat (monthly) has the prayers; also you can go to the web site Universalis and read all the prayers (even in Latin!)

No. You may if you like, and it may be salutary for you, but it should by no means be considered recommended. I think you’re overwhelming yourself by trying to say as many prayers as you can. I’d, however, recommend something very different: stop saying prayers, and start praying.

Mental prayer and meditation are not often stressed enough in our prayer lives. If we pray nothing else, a 15-minute meditation on some perfection of God or incident in the life of Christ every morning is most necessary. The Rosary, indeed, is a blend of vocal and meditative prayer, but its great worth is not so much through its collection of Aves and Paters but through its call to contemplate the mysteries of the lives of Christ and Mary. Many a time while praying the Rosary, I’ve lost the words mid-Ave while my conscious thought was drawn to some aspect of the mystery on which I was meditating.

So, Saphire, instead of worrying about what vocal prayers you should add to your devotional regimen, you’d do best to take some time in silence, preferably at the start of the day, simply letting your heart ponder upon the mysteries of God and of His kingdom. Let that move you to greater piety and love for God, and let it be the wellspring from which your Rosaries and all your other vocal prayers flow.

For more clarity on this, I’d definitely bring this matter to your parish priest or some other trusted priest or religious, who knows your soul far better than any person here.

Don’t overwhelm yourself.
Some people pray a Rosary whole doing other things. I don’t see how they do this, perhaps it is a gift I simply do not have, but the Rosary is so mentally exhaustive I don’t see how it is possible to do other things and say a good decade of the Rosary unless it’s something very rote.
I try to say a divine Mercy chaplet on Saturdays because we remember the death of our Lord on Friday through Friday penance and it is a day reccomended to pray the sorrowful mysteries on. It is between the sorrowful Friday and the glorious Sunday, so I find it good timing. Of course, don’t skip the Rosary today, our Lady of Fatima asked for at least 5 decades a day, so do that.
Beyond that, mental prayer is important and you should do it, it has been called necessary for sainthood.

But prayer is a thing that shouldn’t overwhelm you. Do what God wills, and grow at the rate He desires. Some are quick. Some are slow.

Thank you everyone for you (name removed by moderator)ut. I understand better about praying. I will stick with the daily rosary and maybe on occasion pray the novenas and chaplets.
