My upbringing was rooted in faith, hope, and trust in our Catholic religion and God’s will, particularly after the death of my father at 38 years old. I have always been grateful for the blessing of having something bigger to believe in than the world I know. Novenas are as much a part of my life as breathing, eating, sleeping, but I sometimes wonder if I’m asking too much too often. My prayers and requests are not for things, or good fortune, or vain pursuits but are most often centered around my family (human and furry) and my loved ones – well-being, healing, safety, etc. Is there a certain point at which we as believers should back off, or “Let go and let God” as the saying goes? I understand we should pray without ceasing, but I sometimes feel like a needy and helpless problem child who can’t figure it out for myself.

That’s what you are. That’s what we all are. That’s really the point of this whole endeavor of Christianity: we’re needy and helpless children who can’t figure things out for ourselves.
