I’m a Protestant learning about Catholicism, but I have a question about novenas. I was under the original impression that a novena was a certain prescribed prayer done for nine days in a row. On the internet, I found a St. Jude novena that is supposed to be done NINE TIMES A DAY FOR NINE DAYS! Yikes!

How are we supposed to do it?
 
Novenas are any set of nine prayers. The prayer can be said nine times in a row; it can be done once a day for nine days; or, yes, it theoretically could be done nine times a day for nine days (although this would be highly unusual and is certainly not required).
