Novenas

I was brought up with really faithful parents. They prayed the rosary daily as well as said novenas when needed. I too have a love for novenas.

The problem is that I don’t think that they are being “heard”. I cannot tell you how many times I have faithfully done a novena to St. Therese and still have yet to receive a sign of a rose or my petition answered. The same goes for several other saints. I am starting to loose my confidence in the saints and their intercession on my behalf.

My wife prayed daily for me for 10 years for God to give me the grace to see the truth and it worked. I became a Catholic in 1992.

When one prays, he should not expect things to happen the way he wants. God knows what is best for each one of us - His way of answering to our prayer is the best.

Many times, his prayers get answered but he doesn’t even realize it. Other times, it happens years and years later.

More importantly, what one asks of God should be pleasing to Him and for His Glory.

As Marcus Grodi told me just the other weekend at the EWTN celebration…“In God’s Time”

I have to always remind myself that time doesn’t matter to God the way we see it. Gosh, it’s so hard being a human and having no patience…

Sometimes I find, if I look harder… look somewhere else for the answer I’ll find it…when I least expect it, and in a form that I least expected it.

Then again, some of the greatest gifts are unanswered prayers.

It’s a mystery.

God does things in His time, not ours, so prayers are heard and answered, we just don’t know when or how. This is faith, continue to pray and trust with perseverence.

How true this is. When I was 13, I prayed for a girlfriend, but the one that I was praying to be my girlfiend, never worked out. But on the very day that I was finishing my novena, my classmate and I were painting in the nun’s convent…with bright yellow paint, which got on our shoes, hands and “green” jeans. But there was a wedding that day…and no altar servers showed up…so the nuns recruited us, paint and all. 25 years later, my wife and I went to her cousins’ house for an anniversary party. She was married at my home parish, so I perused the wedding pictures…and there I was the altar server, covered with yellow paint on my shoes and standing next to me was the Jr. bridesmaid, my wife…who I didn’t officially meet until 7 years later as an adult. We were married about 10 years at that time. So God answered my novena on the very day it was finished…but he didn’t let me know how it was answered until 25 years later.
