i was raised a traditionalist catholic. Unfortunately today i have been lax in my religion. I am engaged and am looking to be married next year. My fiance is a novus ordo catholic and wants to be married in the church which her family attends. My question is, would i be sinning by being married in a novos ordo church? I was also thinking of just having the wedding ceremony and not the mass at my wedding. Any advice would be appreciated.

No, you would not be sinning. It’s 100% valid, and anyone who tells you otherwise are schismatic.

Last time I checked, “traditional” Catholics were loyal to the Magisterium and therefore free to marry in any Catholic church. 🙂

👍

As to Mass or no Mass, this is something you should discuss during your marriage preparation. Weddings are equally valid and Sacramental whether or not they are in the context of a nuptial Mass. Most of the time, when both spouses are Catholic, a Mass is the first choice but it’s not required.

Is this a trick question? It is impossible to identify yourself as a “traditional Catholic” and go on to ask whether Mass or sacraments celebrated at any Catholic Church in communion with Rome are valid, much less would it be sinful.

Of course, a well-catechised and truly practical Catholic would never have asked such a question, but we have to assume the best intentions in others.

Thank you. I hope we stop this silly schismatic culture with talk of conservative vs traditional vs liberal.

For the OP: watch out for some groups out there who claim to be Catholic but have separated themselves from the Vatican as traditionalist reactionaries. I respect them for following their conscience, but whatever they say if it’s not approved by the See of Peter, it is not the faith of the Catholic Church.

This guy is full of it. 1st post he comes in here and tries to stir up controversy pretending to be a traditionalist. I see this often on forums where people pretend to be part of something they don’t like. They then go to the extreme to try and make that group of people look bad. Do not buy into this junk.

You noticed too ? 😉

No one raised a trad would ask such.

If you wish to be married in the Catholic church, you will need to attend marriage preparation, which generally takes six months. You will get the anwer to this and many other questions that you may not even have thought of before you can marry.

You never know. At only one post, I think we can give the benefit of the doubt. Anyway, what about other people reading these forums?

Good catch. I literally shake my head with posts like this. Or in Liturgy and Sacraments, a new user with his first post start with, “is this an abuse? My priest was breakdancing during Mass…” or something to that effect. I mean, c’mon, are real new users that way? And how did Catholic Answers Forum suddenly become the abuse report desk of the Church?

It does feed the need of a few members here, who seem to always be on the lookout for any justification of their inordinate focus.

One would think charity is more important that argument. The question was asked and answered. There really will be no dissent. No, it is not immoral for a Catholic to be married in a Catholic Church.

I was hoping to stop 20 pages of arguments only to have the thread closed.

Ah, or maybe he’s one of them thar stealth Trads who KNOWS that someone would point out his dissembling and thereby make regular Catholics look bad by taking the cover of an anti-Trad! Or maybe he knows someone will point out their dissembling and he’s really doing a DOUBLE-DISSEMBLE, using the cover of a pro-Trad, just to make Trads look bad and garner more sympathy for them. Or maybe a TRIPLE-DISSEMBLE is happening before our eyes.

Or maybe he is sincere in his question and honestly didn’t know any better, and maybe we should just give him the benefit of the doubt. 🤷

Lets see. The person posted one hour ago, had a reply in 3 minutes, had over 15 replies in an hour, still hasn’t replied back. Whats your bet we’ll never hear from this poster again?

Well, you and husdon have very good points, and it goes to show how factions and dissensions work against unity, and remove peace, as there are people out there who do not have the plan and desires of Christ in their hearts, and who oppose Him and revel with relish whenever a Catholic, in the zeal of their agenda, shouts about a liturgical faux pas or calumniates about a local priest.

It is sin to suppose that there is something wrong with the approved rite of the Church. The Church acts in the name of Jesus Christ.
