This is kindly but grossly unhelpful/negligent advice to give to a fellow Catholic. It is a gross misrepresentation to remove the objective sinfulness of masturbation which the Church teaches “is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action” (CCC 2352). By downplaying the sinful behavior of masturbation as “it’s kind of neutral” and comparing the illicit seeking of sexual pleasure outside the sanctity of marriage to “About as much as eating ice cream for pleasure”, does a monumental disservice to directing and promoting one to the virtue of chastity and the necessary task of self-mastery.I don’t know. Maybe you’re harming yourself more by demonizing your natural sexual desires than you would if you masturbated.
Is it evil? About as much as eating ice cream for pleasure. If you are looking at pornography or thinking pornographic thoughts, you can make an argumentn for it being bad. But if you’re just doing the physical act for pleasure … it’s kind of neutral, I wouldn’t see evil in it. Maybe a lack of self control
But going to hell because of a lack of self control over the most powerful human instinct? That sounds excessive to me.
2345 Chastity is a moral virtue. It is also a gift from God, a grace, a fruit of spiritual effort. The Holy Spirit enables one whom the water of Baptism has regenerated to imitate the purity of Christ.
2395 Chastity means the integration of sexuality within the person. It includes an apprenticeship in self-mastery.
2342 Self-mastery is a long and exacting work. One can never consider it acquired once and for all. It presupposes renewed effort at all stages of life. The effort required can be more intense in certain periods, such as when the personality is being formed during childhood and adolescence.
2339 Chastity includes an *apprenticeship in self-mastery * which is a training in human freedom. The alternative is clear: either man governs his passions and finds peace, or he lets himself be dominated by them and becomes unhappy.
