Now that the Holy See is vacant, are sedevacantists (temporarily) in full communion?

If the Sedevacantists believe (for unjustified reasons) that there is no pope, and in point of fact there is no pope at the present moment, are the Sedevacantists still in a state of heresy/schism as a result of their (temporarily and coincidentally) true belief?
 
Nope.

They believe there hasn’t been a real Pope since…(fill in your favorite pre 1962 Pope here).

Sedevacantists are not in Communion with the Catholic Church. Sedevacantists are still in a state of heresy/schism until they accept the teachings and authority of the Church and reconcile with the Church.
 
This question seems a little bit mischievous to me 🙂

Just because there is about to be no Pope doesn’t mean that every Catholic suddenly becomes a ‘sedevacantist’ because to be a ‘sedevacantist’ is a political position regarding the validity of the papal line since whenever that particular group chooses its point of dissention with whoever was then Pope.

They tend to believe that because none of the Cardinal electors now in office were created Bishop or Cardinal by their favourite Pope, the Church is therefore defunct as a valid body and they usually go to all sorts of tortured logic to try and claim that the Petrine Line of Succession consists in their sects instead.

No actual Catholic believes this, so despite the See of Rome being vacant as of this evening, we know that a future Pope is among the Cardinals and will be chosen. A vacant See does not sedevacantists us make.

I would think such people aren’t sedevacantists (they don’t really think the see is empty), but followers of an antipope.

They consider themselves Catholic, and us not Catholic. But there are a bunch of different groups of them. Look up “Pope Michael” for kicks. He did not step down today.

I wouldn’t really call them Protestants or Catholic. Good question! I doubt there are too many on CAF to give us their views, though.

If they are sedevacantists, they actually care about the Chair of St. Peter, so they obviously consider themselves Catholic. E.g. Presbyterians are not sedevacantists.
 
There’s still a pope for another half hour. The seat’s not vacant yet. 😉
 
Do you have these discussions when a pope dies? Not trying to be snarky, just curious.
 
For sedevecantists, it’s not just about the Pope, but the whole Church.

I didnt realise until reading some of the links on this thread just how deep this division was. is it fair to say that, whereas the SSPX are in irregular standing and can be regularised if they will submit to certain conditions, the SSPV and other Sedevacantists groups deny so much of the Church’s authority that it would be impossible for there to be an institutional reconciliation, only individuals repenting and returning to the Church?

Yes, and they believe that we are about to elect another anti-pope. I just don’t get it. Following that thinking I guess there will never be a real one? Is the end of the world around the corner? And no one told me!?

I don’t know if I would say impossible, but certainly very difficult. Even more difficult than what is going on with the SSPX and that has been difficult enough.
