I think that some people forget that the Bishop didn’t really excommunicat her. If I remember right, cannon law says that anyone that is involved in or helped in an abortion is automatically excommunicated. The sister excommunicated herself by her actions, the bishop just let everyone know about it. I also think that people sometimes forget that the unborn baby is a person too. To kill the unborn intentionally, even to save a life is still killing an innocent person. Both should TRY to be saved, and if in those attempts to save BOTH one should die, then okay, at least they tried. When you realize and come to grips with the fact that an unborn child is a person too, the decision is not all that complicated. Is there any other instance that it is okay to kill and INNOCENT person to save someone else’s life? I can’t think of any, why should this be any different.🤷

I think it’s easy for a priest, bishop, canon lawyer, or even the pope to make and declare such penalties when it’s an academic exercise. I’m not so sure they would do as well if they all had to look a husband in the eyes and tell him that you have made a decision and that his wife, mother of his other children, etc. is going to die because of it.

I think you’re misunderstanding here. If a woman finds herself in dire need of ending a pregnancy then there are ways that it can happen. For example, if a woman is undergoing an ectopic pregnancy, the piece of fallopian tube in which the embryo has implanted can be removed. However, the embryo cannot be directly aborted. This is what I know as “dire need indirect abortion”. The nun performed a direct abortion and that is never permitted by the Church.

The article is particularly bad, it says that sexually abusive priests are let off the hook, but this nun was not. This is not the case, the priests are also excommunicated for their action.

Oh the woes of the uninformed reporter.

No, I don’t believe he is misunderstanding at all. He’s “trolling.” He doesn’t have a question, he’s not open to the Catholic POV, he’s in direct opposition to it. To him, the greater sins are denying “choice” and the Excommunication (which was self-imposed, and easily remedied by the Nun repenting of her sin). Never mind that the life of a child was lost by the “choice.”

Sad.
