NRSV is unfaithful

Wait, I didn’t say that. The sources used in Douay and Rheims most certainly could have not been the purest to work with. What I said was that while no one should say that their formula used wasn’t excellent, it could have just been that they didn’t always have the purest sources to work with.

I know you didn’t; I was deliberately twisting your wording because I was in a “Douay-Rheims” mood at the time. 😉

As you can see from some of my other postings, I get frustrated with, and distrustful of, some modern (mis)translations, to the point where I just want to bury my head in the sand on anything other than the D-R. But it’s not the critical editions of the Hebrew and Greek that I’m concerned about; it’s how the various translation teams choose to render them into English. I had thought the translators of the RSV had done this better than those of the NAB or JB/NJB, but, as you know from our other thread, it needs some work as well. And now, with all the variants of late, the “real” RSV-CE is not even easy to identify.
 
If they went through the Douay Rheims and compared it to the original languages and corrected it as such, that would be QUITE GOOD and shouldn’t conflict with the DAS or LA at all.
OK, so a translation team takes the D-R-C and begins comparing the text to a Hebrew or Greek critical text; before long, verses are excised (several in Sirach; 1 John 5:7-8, etc.); some renderings are completely changed since the Hebrew or Greek made clearer a previously-obscure Latin text; archaic phraseology and writing styles are updated.

But would/could this team retain the “excellent” style of the D-R-C?

I suppose it’s possible.
 
Nobody really knows that Osee is really Hosea, or that 1&2 Kings are really 1&2 Samuel, etc., unless they are super Bible scholars. Also, the Psalms are numbered differently. Everybody knows the 23rd Psalm, except, if somebody happens to use a Douay-Rheims Bible, then it’s actually the 22nd Psalm. :whacky: :bigyikes:

  2. The DRV uses the Greek Numbering of the Psalms. Most Modern Translations use the Hebrew Numbering. In terms of Catholic Tradition the Greek Numbering takes precedence. The Jerusalem Bible also uses the Greek Numbering as does the Douay-Confranternity. The Grail Psalms are also numbered according to the Greek one.
