Were the original NT writings all in various languages? What was the Gospel of Matthew originally written in? (Please site references.)

Some say Aramaic but there are no original copies to prove this.

Then one can never have final proof of what original language Mt. 16:18 was said in. I guess unless, there is evidence Jesus only spoke Aramaic. Otherwise, one can only assume that he said Kepha vs Petros or anything else.

I have seen the argument that the grammatical structure is that of an Aramaic document translated into Greek, as opposed to a Greek original.

I don’t know enough about either to give an opinion.

Can I be so blunt as to ask why you are asking??

I know that sounds a bit rude to do, and I apologize if it comes out that way.

I am guessing you are trying to disprove the Priesthood in the CC?

I dont want to assume anything here, but I am being honest that is what it sounds like.

If so, that is not the only verse you need to be preoccupied with, just a heads up.

The bible itself is a very beautiful thing. It only becomes ugly when it is looked at as a mere manual or recipie.

Can I ask if you have considered praying before reading the Holy Scriptures for the Holy Spirit to guide you?

The matter you are pointing to here is not isolated to one single verse.

Bear in mind brother, context, and ask yourself if you are seeking the answers to your questions in prayer and contemplation.

You may already be doing this and I am not saying you have not. I only ask you to do it Today. Again.
Especially Today.

Hi Everyone. To clarify my reasoning for the post, I am **not **trying to contest Catholic teaching, but to better understand it as I come across misunderstandings of my own. That is my sole reason. That said, I understand the language of the original NT–or Gospel of Mt for that matter–is not easily found, which if fine. I was actually trying to prove to myself that the rock, referred to in Mt. 16:18 is Peter and not his Faith. If it was originally in Aramaic, then this issue is quickly resolved in my opinion. But, if its origin was in Greek, I sought for further understanding…I feel I found good reference at scripturecatholic.com/the_church.html#the_church-I
