nubane for delivery

I wonder if anyone here has recently used the drug, Nubane, for labor and delivery. I had it for my first two children, nothing for the next 3, and for my 6th I had stadol, which did NOT agree with me. I’ve requested Nubane from my new OB, and he doesn’t know if it’s still made, but he said he’d check. In any case, I thought it couldn’t hurt to ask here because I really did well with that bit of help during labor.

Nubain made me hallucinate. I remember my hallucinations more than my daughter’s birth, actually. :rolleyes:
 
Wait are you taking the nubain for the actual delivery or for the cramps afterwards? I am sure you got some wicked cramps after delivery at what? Number 7 now? :eek:

Nubain was kinda shelved when babies were coming out really high. Unable to nurse or find the breast, and slow start with breathing and low apgars. If your babies typically did not seem drowsy or stoned, then I suspect you know what you are doing.

I don’t get it – if you have done it naturally three times: why take drugs to help you through it now? Heck lady, you are a pro!

I did just learn from an OB nurse friend of mine that there have been some adverse effects for the babies. Mine did fine, and while I may not opt for a drug, I really want it on deck. Y’know, each delivery is different so I’m just lining up my options.
She told me that fentanyl (sp?) is an option, so I’ll look into that. Stadol paralyzed me completely and I didn’t like it at all!
 
Just make sure you stay away from demerol. It is not as easily processed by little baby livers, and then the byproduct can build up and cause seizures :eek:

I much prefered going without the IV meds and using just the epidural. It was horrible being knocked out with the IV drugs and then waking up in excruciating pain every 2 minutes or so when I would have a contraction 😦 I’m so glad that finally I was able to get an epidural and the IV stuff was mostly out of my system by the time baby was born. With my second baby I made it through without IV meds at all and it was much better (but maybe that’s also due to it being my second delivery).

Is there any reason why you’re opting not to use an epidural instead?
 
Well, I may be misinformed, but I don’t want anything going into my spine. That freaks me out and I’ll avoid that at all costs. Other reasons for avoiding epidurals are that I do want to experience most of the delivery, pain and all. And lastly, my sister had an epi and she was sssoooooo sick from it. She threw up all through delivery and had a horrible headache after.
I guess I think (perhaps erroneously) that it is a stronger drug, therefore a stronger potential side effect. I’d much rather go another route.

Fair enough 🙂 I was thinking maybe your insurance didn’t cover it. So you are going to try go all natural but want something on stand-by just in case?
 
The needle they use for epis freaks me out! I had fentanol (sp) with all 3 of mine. I asked for it right as I was going into transition labor. It made me sleepy, but I could still work with the contractions. It wore off by the end of transition labor and I was fully ok for pushing.

All 3 babies came out fine. Well, except Kyle, but he was a little sick, so I think he was so drowsy because of a few factors. One of which could have been the drug. I won’t discount that, but the first two didn’t have much trouble.

I’ve never heard of the drug you are asking about in your op.
 
They gave me Nubain AFTER this last birth because I was so itchy from the morphine in my spinal from the c-section. (I hate all the drugs going into my system to begin with, but 🤷 )

But I HATED the Nubain… it made me extremely drowsy and made my ears ring. I know personally, I would not have liked it during birth.

Just my experience with it…

Ringing in the ears is a sign of toxicity in many drugs :eek: I’m not sure about Nubain though…
