Hi all,

Is Nuclear war possible?
Given the fact that for the first time in history, humans possess the power to completly wipe life off the face of the earth, with nuclear weapons, would God allow that??
Given what the Gospels say:
“And unless the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake, whom He chose, He shortened the days”
Will God shorten the days/intervene to stop it

What do you mean for the first time in history? We’ve possessed the capability for some decades now. As to whether they may be used to do so, difficult to tell. I’d say unlikely though.

And while we haven’t always had 'em, there have been other things such as the Black Death of the 1300s which wiped out 1/3 or so of the population of Europe without help from any malevolence on our part. So to ‘no-one knows the day or the hour’ we can probably add ‘no-one knows the method’.

in a sense World War II was a nuclear war, in that nuclear weapons were used twice. So yes, nuclear war is possible and real.

Whether, during the height of the cold war, nuclear weapons would have been used in such a way as to at once wipe out all life on earth seems unlikely, although perhaps the aftereffect of a massive nuclear exchange would be to make life very difficult for the survivors over the coming months and years.

But I suppose the larger question is, if we did have such capability as to wipe out all life on earth at once, could the impending use of said capability, or indeed any human action, force God’s hand, so to speak? That seems counter to my understanding.

Mitabrev,

Hello and welcome to the Catholic Answers Forums. I hope you have a blessed and fruitful time here.

I agree with the respondent that it is highly unlikely that a nuclear war would wipe all life off the face of the earth. Life has survived asteroid impacts, after all.

Would God allow it? It’s certainly one way to fulfill II Peter 3:12.

Should we worry about it? Not unless it is our immediate job to prevent it. We are all going to die sooner or later.

exactly… i can PROMISE you, that you have a 50% chance of dying from heart disease.

yet people will fear war and smallpox whilst shoveling high fructose corn syrup and saturated fats down their gullet and watching their waistlines expand to record proportions.

explain THAT to me.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we had a global nuclear war, you might see the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ right along with it.

Some people got those realy spiffy bunkers with 35+ years of stuff.

They duck and cover to the extream, make it out, and life goes on.

I see no reason to believe that God will stop us from killing ourselves with nukes. Maybe those in the mars club are up to something.

Genesis 8:22:

“As long as the earth endures,
seedtime and harvest,
cold and heat,
summer and winter,
day and night
will never cease.”

This tells me that:

The world will not become completely uninhabitable unless the END has arrived.

In other words, it will not be disrupted to the point that the climate and seasons are out of whack.
Which means to me, no global warming, no ice age, no nuclear winter.

While there may be localized nuclear destruction, the verse above tells me that God promises the climate of the earth will not be radically changed.

2 Peter 3:8-13 (New International Version)

8But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.

11Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 13But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.

I think we can see those events taking place on the church with all the persecutions of the media and with what secularism is doing to the church. Its virtually killing everyone spiritually, and its making everyone more secular.

I personately think God has stopped a nuclear war from happening many times. jsut watch what happened in Cuba when Kenedy was president. and all the issues thorughout the cold war.
