Hi all,

I am soon to attend a bachelorette party for a good friend. Said friend does not want strippers, which is a relief, but she does want us all to attend a nude drawing class (I’ve been told that they do teach us how to draw). Now I don’t have a problem with nude art for the purpose of art alone, but in this context I’m not so sure. Do I sit this out? Advice please:)

A nude model in a legit art class is fine, however this seems to be a bachelorette party posing as an art class. How much do you trust the judgement of the bride? Will there be drinking involved? Crude party games? You should get more info and if you are on the fence feel free to sit this out.

I would just talk to the friend and get an assurance that the model will be treated with dignity and respect, since I would not want to have to get up and leave in the middle of the gathering. It is my sense, however, that the bride does not want a party to become an excuse to see a man’s body as an object of lust for a bunch of women, so I would think the OP will indeed get this assurance.

The ‘art class’ goes for 2 hrs. There is no drinking or games during this time, but after the class we will be going to her place where there will be drinking and games.

“A bachelorette party posing as an art class”. This is what I was worried about. I know the girls coming are pretty tame and will be dignified and respectful, my problem is the reason for choosing this particular activity in the first place. The classes are held by a company that holds classes specifically for the purpose of hens nights, none of us are artists, nor have any interest in being artists.

Sounds a bit dodgy and like the purpose is to have fun with nudity, disguised as something tasteful and artsy. If you don’t feel comfortable with this, just don’t go.

OTOH, this activity may have been chosen precisely because the spirit of the party is intended to be diametrically opposed to the usual bawdy and disrespectful inclusion of a man at one of these parties.

“hens nights”.
There’s your answer. It’s inappropriate posing as an educational endeavor, no pun intended.
I wouldn’t go. Sounds pretty juvenile.

I’d be afraid somebody might ask to see my drawing! 😊
(Maybe this is where the entertainment is supposed to come in. I guess it probably wouldn’t be much worse than my attempts to fashion a wedding gown from toilet paper.)

Use your common sense. It is a hens party. None of you are artists, nor want to be. Come on! Tittering, simpering, double entente? … all possible. Responsible sixty second, three minute; five minute sketch attempts to find flow and form as in most life classes?.. probably not.
Use the good sense and discernment that your concerns obviously show and make up your own mind. What do you personally expect to get out of the art class? God Bless.

In another thread, I was not against nude art class.

In this thread, I am against it. This sounds like it’s basically a stripper who stays in one position.

If worst comes to worst–maybe skip out on the “class” and go for the drinking and games afterwards?

It would depend on the group, but the more I think about it, it wouldn’t matter to me if the subject were a bowl of fruit. I would not consider it a good time to do art and compare my work with my close women friends, and I don’t care how much champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries were used as a lure. The only thing worse than if my work were the worst would be–Heaven forbid–if what I could do was the best! Maybe it’s just me, but this sounds like something that makes me prefer the toilet paper dress activity, lol! 😃

Let’s hope there will be food, and not just drinking and games. When drinking is the centerpiece activity, the results are usually less than optimal.

If you aren’t sure ask yourself:

Will those 2 hours be worth the risk that it may indeed be a very sinful situation?

If you sit out of that part of the night maybe some others will join you and you can help guard their purity as well- positive peer pressure 👍

Make a good excuse and send or stop by later with a thoughtful gift. Sounds weird and BORING!

The last shower I was invited to happened to fall on a night I was volunteering at a local performing arts theater (really).

A friend of mine was telling me about the plans she and her friends were trying to come up with for her sister’s bachelorette party. She was adamant that they were trying to avoid the same sort of tawdry stuff her pending brother-in-law was sure to indulge in, but most of what she came up with were things that involved nudity and lots of drinking. I forget everything they’d come up with, and while they were toned down a bit and had more of a feminine theme, they were all still pretty sleazy when you thought about it. I told her to look over her list and ask herself if she’d still find it acceptable if it was her husband and a bunch of guys doing it. That got her to eliminate about half the list. That being said, if you hear that a bunch of guys were planning on taking a nude drawing class as part of their bachelor party, would that change your impression of it?

Bingo! More to the point, if you asked this group if they’d send a priest off to his ordination or a young man or woman off to the monastery with a gathering like this, you know what the answer would be! These parties ought to welcome married life, not look back sadly at single life. “No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God.” Luke 9:62.

Uhhhhhhhh…I would not attend.

I have no problem whatsoever with nude modeling and nude art. My second year of college I worked as a studio assistant for the art department at my university. Basically, I washed paint brushes and set up chairs. There were several times that I was present for a nude sketch day and it was very tasteful and professional. The model was not treated inappropriately.

However, these women do not sound like artists, but just seem interested in looking at a naked man. There’s no way that I’m going to look my husband in the eye and explain why I want to go to something like that, despite the fact that I have trouble drawing stick figures. And there’s no way he would be ok with that. Likewise, if he were an artist, I wouldn’t have a problem with him using nude models. But he isn’t an artist, and therefore there is no legitimate reason for him to participate in something like that. As a married woman, I wouldn’t go. As someone with really high standards of fidelity, I don’t think that the soon-to-be-married bride should go either.

I’d show up after the art class with a bottle of wine and a gift.

Go ahead and go; you might learn something about art. Can you find out anything about the classes or school before you go? Then you can a better idea of what might really be going on. If it gets too rowdy or uncomfortable you can always develop a “headache” and leave early.

I want to add something to this ^^ my original comment:

I have had male students who have confided that they actually loathe these kinds of bachelor parties…they go because of pressure. They go because they don’t want their male friends to call them names or ridicule their values.
Pressure.
So now women, in order to keep up with the guys, have adopted these ridiculous ritual parties. Take a stand., When women decide as a group that they will not participate in the objectification of men, then maybe the guys will man up and say, you know, this stuff is dumb and demeaning to us as well. We can celebrate without compromising our values as faithful men and women.
your one vote won’t change the world…but every little bit helps! 😉 If you make one young woman stop and think about it in the appropriate light…you will have made a difference.
peace to you,
pianist

If it is a legit art school, I feel terrible for the model who may not realize the private art class is actually just going to be a chance to just ogle his body and let people make inappropriate comments.

The one bachelorette party I attended was basically a really awesome grown-up sleepover. It was 100% appropriate. Since we were adults we actually had the money and the freedom to have the sleepover that any woman’s inner 5th grade girl would only dream about!

I don’t know how well you know the bride, so I don’t know how much influence you have over the party. If you have the means to influence the party plans, recommend a really awesome sleepover. It could even be a throwback theme of some sort.
