I did a web search. Apparently, these parties are all the rage in Austrailia. The Artful Bachorette was started in New York by two women artists from Austrailia and more places are beginning to do it (I saw some yelp reviews of another place in California).
There is a NY Times article about the Artful Bachorette. The male models know why they are there, it is not just another art class to them.
A couple of interesting things: The bride to be is asked to remove the towel from around the model. The teacher is quoted as instructing the students, “Don’t forget the male member. It’s very important.”
This company does give the opinion of having the model wear a swimsuit.
Food and alcohol is provided and drinking is encouraged while drawing.
This is just a sample of what some of these parties may be like. No telling if the one the OP is invited to will be the same. But, still, I would make an excuse for that part of the shower at least.
