Nuevo Trad Catholics revolt - humorous blog

This is form the Blog “Creative Minority Report”:

*"A bunch of old fogey whiners in love with the liturgy of the past want to return all of us kicking and screaming back to the Dark Ages or something. They’re angry that the liturgy has changed.

Hey man, Catholicism has progressed.

Critics of the new language are saying that this liturgy is faulted.

Soon they’ll say things like it’s illicit and they’ll form their own society that says the Mass must be the way it was when they were kids. And I’m all like just because something was once that way doesn’t mean it has to exist that way forever. It’s like these people want to stop the Church from progressing or something.

They’re saying the liturgy has been “hijacked” by “deception.”

These people! Why are they trying to drag the Church backwards?! We are a 21st century Church. That old liturgy is soooo 20th century. The Mass is a living breathing thing man. You wanna’ take us back the Mass of the height of the sex abuse scandal. Is that what you want?

Oh the lamentations of, “I remember when I was a kid the liturgy…blah blah blah…” and the whining about why did everything have to change because everything was so (insert blahs here.)

All these Nuevo Trad Catholics want to force us all into the way way back machine. I mean, why not just have the Mass the same as it was in the 70’s or something."*

I love the OF, I love the EF, I love the Maronite Mass, and I love the Divine Liturgy. I am an old man that does not like change and this humorous blog really hit the spot. I laughed at myself reminding me of when I tried to defend the different forms of the Mass or of the Divine Liturgy when attacked by different people for different reasons. This is the gift of consolation that I needed from God this morning, I was feeling despair for the salvation of a lot of people and suddenly I was gifted with the reminder of how powerful is the gift of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, independently from our likes or dislikes. Deo Gratias.

This post is not poking at the EF community because I make it clear that it is a humorous blog, and it is quite a conservative one. Second, this is what is really going on in some English speaking parishes where the argumentation used is very similar to the one that has been used in the past to argue in favor. I think that if you really read it again you will see that the point is that a lot of non traditionalist Catholics now follow the same logic that until a few weeks ago they declared flawed and they do not recognize that “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander”. It is also important for the apologist of the EF to make sure that they do not follow in the same intellectual trap. This scenario that is coming out is evidence that apologetics for specific things, including the form of the Mass, must be done without using feelings, personal opinions and unsupported generalized statements. The first apologetic point is that even if we were to consider the initial logic valid (and I disagree with that) we could say that while the the EF has never been abrogated a newer edition of the same missal abrogates the previous one (without making it invalid).

Dang! We keep missing each other, I also corrected my post because I did not want to put you on the spot with your first comment. I guess that we should stop changing things around. 😃

I understood your immediate reaction but I think that the post was a really funny tool to force us to refine our apologetics skills in defense of what is really sacred to us.

I think that we are just aligned on our thinking, the problem is that the EF and traditions in general have been attacked so often in this thread that our natural reaction has become a defensive one.

This is very true. I know I am very defensive when it comes to certain threads, because I can foresee their trajectory so to speak.

I try not to be, but I often fail. :o

Well, I don’t know about that… I long for the days of burlap banners, guitar-strumming hippies and rainbow vestments. I miss holding hands with complete strangers at the Saturday night disco Mass while I watched altar girls in leotards leap across the vestible waving ribbons in my face. You know, like the early Church. Good times.

So basically, it’s saying with the new translations, some who attend the OF are going to become unhappy and they will become the new trads. They are going to long for the days of the old translations, hippie masses etc. Kind of funny.

What isn’t funny is that in a more subtle way, it is trivializing the issues that trads have the current liturgy, practices etc.
