Hi everyone.

I was wondering if it is alright for there to be readings excluded from Mass. I’ve seen it twice at the same parish where each time a reading was removed. One was a Confirmation Mass, and the other was a weekday Mass, if this makes a difference.

Thanks in advance!

For a weekday Mass, there are only two readings: one reading from the Lectionary, and then one from the Book of the Gospels. Unless it is a Holy Day (i.e.: Immaculate Conception, Ascension, Assumption, etc.) that should fall on a weekday, there are only two readings. There are three readings on Holy Days, as mentioned above.

For a Confirmation Mass, I’m not sure. I think there should be the same amount of readings as a Sunday Mass and Holy Day (3), however, don’t take my word for it.

Thank you. I’m not used to weekday Mass, so I was a bit thrown off.

I just found out here that some bishops’ conferences have approved limiting a reading. Here in Canada, there are usually three readings. Does anyone know if the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops has made a decision in this area?

And so you know, the Gospel reading was never omitted (which would be a liturgical abuse according to this thread).

Typically the separate/ornate Book of Gospels does not include most weekday readings.

No, it’s not alright unless the Lectionary specifically says so.
