Are there any numbers in the bible that we (Catholics) take literally?
Thanks

It would be helpful to know what you’re addressing?

Are you speaking of literal 7-day (as we know them now) creation? Then no, we are not required to believe that.

Are you speaking of the numbers that Jesus was in the desert or in the tomb? Yes, we believe that was a literal 40 and 3 days respectively.

Are you speaking of the numbers in revelation? Sort of. Scott Hahn has a good book about that. Most of Revelation is in regards to things that have already occurred, not the silly neurology that’s been propagated to show the end of the world or attack our Islamic brethren.

The Trinity isn’t mentioned in the bible as such.

More like in Dan 4:13 and seven times pass over him…
In Rev. Do we take the number of 7 seals and 7 churches literally?
Rev 12:14 times, twice a year and a half year? The calendar has changed through the years, how long would a year have been then? 365 plus leap year?

The reign of 1,000 years in Rev. 20?

I understand the 12 tribes and 12 apostles,40 days in the desert. 40 days to Pentecost.

I realize that the 7 days of creation are not literal, at least I don’t think they are but who even knows about that?

And does it really matter one way or another.

Just thinking out loud!!

I would be interested in Scott Hahn’s book. Do you have the title?

So I assume that some numbers are literal and some not and it is for us to KNOW the difference?

HMMMM
Thanks

If you want to know about revelations Scott Hahn’s “the End” is excellent if you can track it down.

Too many people today try and make it into something it’s not.

Of course. And there are also numbers that we take symbolically.

Knowing which is which depends on the text in question, and properly analyzing certain things can take a formal education coupled with a knowledge of traditional and modern Catholic exegesis.

The simplest solution for a layman is to buy a good Bible commentary, preferably something like the 10 Navarre Bible volumes. That will be more than adequate.

It looks to me that this is a cd with study book at an extra cost. The Book probably wouldn’t much good without the cd.
thanks
