Eric, threatening to commit suicide by a hunger strike is not “non-violent”. I have never understood why Gandhi is considered a non-violent protester.
Most leaders send their troops off to die, Ghandi was willing to sacrifice himself instead of troops, a most unusual leader.

Maybe something in common with Nelson Mandela, and maybe the nuns?

Ghandi quotes (by the way):
Among the many misdeeds of the British rule in India, history will look upon the Act depriving a whole nation of arms as the blackest.source.

“If we had the atom bomb, we would have used it against the British.”source

“In this instance of the fire-arms, the Asiatic has been most improperly bracketed with the natives. The British Indian does not need any such restrictions as are imposed by the Bill on the natives regarding the carrying of fire-arms. The prominent race can remain so by preventing the native from arming himself. Is there a slightest vestige of justification for so preventing the British Indian?” – source

*If we cannot adopt this course, there is another which we, as a people aspiring to be free, ought to know about that of countering force with force. We should become strong enough to defend life and property. Of course, protection is provided by the Natal Government. But whites do not look on helplessly [when attacked by anyone].They equip themselves with the means of self-defence. If anyone counters by saying that we are not allowed to keep arms or that we cannot have them when we need them, those excuses will not be valid. We can defend ourselves without weapons. It is a matter of training one’s body and of skill. When we were attacked by the whites in America, we hid ourselves. When they attacked the Japanese, the latter armed themselves with sticks and bottles.

Many whites are able to defend themselves without so much as a revolver. Indians must learn to do likewise. This of course cannot happen in a day. ‘While a fire is raging, what is the use of advising one ever so wisely that one should start digging a well?’ This would be a well-deserved taunt. But we wish to suggest a measure that can be adopted immediately and will fore-stall this taunt. Primarily our duty is to search out the hidden causes and suggest permanent remedies. It is quackery to apply ointment on a boil; the infection should be traced to its source and effectively treated.*

You obviously forgot when Israel destroyed the Iraqi nuclear power plant back in the 1980s. You also obviously forgot about the 550 metric tonnes of yellowcake uranium that were found. It was removed from Iraq in 2008.(yellowcake is uranium that has been refined to remove the impurities but hasn’t yet been concentrated and formed into rods or separated into fissile material that can then be used in bombs)

As I said above, while I can respect a diversity of perspectives, it would really be helpful if you boned up on your history so that you could make fact-based arguments to bolster your opinions.
Yellowcake is in fact U3O8, a uranium mineral that has not yet been refined into metal.

The separation of the uranium into its “enriched” form (usable for nuclear purposes) and “depleted” form (used in artillery ammunition and aircraft control counterweights, etc) is done before the stuff is reduced to the metallic state.

**The solid form of mixed uranium oxide, which is produced from uranium ore in the uranium recovery (milling) process. **The material is a mixture of uranium oxides, which can vary in proportion and color from yellow to orange to dark green (blackish) depending on the temperature at which the material is dried (which affects the level of hydration and impurities), with higher drying temperatures producing a darker and less soluble material. (The yellowcake produced by most modern mills is actually brown or black, rather than yellow, but the name comes from the color and texture of the concentrates produced by early milling operations.) Yellowcake is commonly referred to as U3O8, because that chemical compound comprises approximately 85 percent of the yellowcake produced by uranium recovery facilities, and that product is then transported to a uranium conversion facility, where it is transformed into uranium hexafluoride (UF6), in preparation for fabricating fuel for nuclear reactors.

(I should have said processing versus refining…mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa)

Britain had no right to own India as a colony, they just wanted to syphon off its wealth, they made exploitation look civilised.
What you say is correct. It is also irrelevant to my point, which is that non-violent tactics of resistance will not work against an uncivilized nation. When dealing with barbarians, you will not survive by putting flowers in their rifle barrels.

So would you call a hunger strike in which you threaten to kill yourself by starvation, “non-violent” ? And if it isn’t non-violent, then how can you call it peaceful?

As for the nuns, (or nun), I think they are misguided. They should concentrate on the real evil happening which is the slaughter of the unborn. I don’t know why Catholics would ignore that in favor of protesting nuclear weapons. How many babies have nuclear weapons killed in the past 50 years?

Why did Christ die on the cross for us, he knew in advance this would happen, he could have walked away?

The way towards justice and peace; seems to make little sense, it often involves sacrifice of some kind. As I understand, Ghandi had tried for a long time to bring about a peaceful resolution, when he felt his efforts were failing, he went on a hunger strike, he would not eat until peace was happening.

Various people understood, that the death of Ghandi would bring about a greater violence, so they were forced to try harder for a peaceful solution, whilst Ghandi still lived.
I find it offensive that you would compare Christ’s crucifixion - his acceptance of the cross - with Gandhi’s act of slow suicide by hunger strike.

Saw that yesterday.

Sounds like she got what she wanted as far as sentencing goes.

Actually, according to the article, she requested the judge give her a life sentence and that putting her in prison for the rest of her life would be the greatest gift he could give her.

Yes…I meant that at her age, the sentence she got most likely IS a life sentence.

Probably not. A lot of federal sentences are reduced at a ratio of about 3:1 and she will get credit for time served - about 9 months according to the article. She is older but seemingly in good health. I doubt she will spend more than a year in actual prison and then be released to a half-way facility.

Ah, I see. I think Corki’s probably right, though. She already has served nine of those 35 months. That really gives her just over two years left.

Plus, most nuns I’ve known live forever. 😛 My great-aunt was a nun and she lived to be 101.

I’ve heard that’s because of less stress from raising a family. 🤷
