My English teacher Sr. Marlene (Sister of St. Joseph) informed my class that we had never seen a nun before in our lives. She claims that a nun never sees anyone outside, or rather, doesn’t communicate with anyone and usually never goes outside the convent. A sister however, is more social.

Confusion? I know there is a difference between a Sister and a Nun but I thought that only cloistered nuns lived away from the outside world.

She basically told us that all nuns are cloistered…

That’s basically correct. Nuns usually take Solemn vows and live in a cloister away from the world. Sisters take Simple vows and live in community but in the world.

We call both nuns and sisters “Sister so&so”, is that correct?

And on the male side, isn’t a monk like a nun (live cloistered away from the world) and a friar is like a sister (live in community but in the world)?

Do we call friars “Brother so&so”, or are brothers something else altogether?

What do we call monks?
