Nuns for Fun website

I saw these people recently - they dress up like nuns and priests and sing and dance. Everybody seems to think it’s all great fun, but it bothers me. They perform mostly at church functions, even at a monastery’s annual festival. It seems to me that it’s like drinking beer out of the chalice or eating potato chips out of the ciborium. It’s profanation.

What do other people think?

Not many, I hope.

What’s problematic with this one, particularly at a monastery’s annual festival- How does one tell the faux from the genuine article??? It’s not like a play, where one knows the odds are good the actors portraying roles are not priest, brothers and sisters.

Did they drink beer out of the chalice or eat potato chips out of the ciborium? Those things would bother me as well.

The “Nunsense” type humor does not bother me at all, though. I enjoyed the two Nunsense plays I saw, and I liked the Sister Act movie.

One of my favorite hangouts is a nearby convent. It is also an infirmary for retired nuns.

The Franciscan sisters there have a pretty good sense of humor and laugh at themselves all the time. Yes they are reverent, but they also laugh.

I have not seen this group perform so I will not form an opinion until I do. But I would use some general guidelines.

If they were not profane, did not mock anything sacred or the sacrifices those in religious life make, such as celibacy, I think they would probably be okay.
