Hello,

This came up today and I am not sure how to answer the question.

For our childrens mass today, instead of a mass they held a word service led by a nun. Then communion was distributed.

Is the Communion still the Body and Blood of Christ since it has already been consecrated or since there is no priest leading the service is it only a symbol during a word service?

Thanks and God bless,
Trevor

Though it was a Communion service, not a Mass, Christ was still present in the Eucharist. Once consecrated, the Host remains the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ until it is no longer recognizable (i.e. has been digested).

Just as it is well and truely the Body and Blood of Jesus when a deacon or lay person brings it to the sick at home or in the hosptal,

Or when it is exposed for Eucharistic Adoration.

Likewise the Body and Blood of Jesus that was distributed to those children.

In fact, what you just outlined was the primary purpose of a Tabnacle, to reserve the Precious Sacrament for when it is needed outside of the celebration of the Mass.

Such services should only e done if a priest is not available, not on a regular basis.

Did she retrieve the communion from the tabernacle? The reason I ask is the mention of the precious blood in the original post. If that was present at this service then a real problem has occurred. If it was conducted on a Sunday and a Priest was present that could have offerred mass, then it is a real problem. If people went to this service by choice instead of attending mass then it is a real problem. We need a few more details to be sure.

God Bless
