Nuns in India tell AP of enduring abuse in Catholic church

By TIM SULLIVAN January 2, 2019

. . . . Across India, the nuns talk of priests who pushed into their bedrooms and of priests who pressured them to turn close friendships into sex. They talk about being groped and kissed, of hands pressed against them by men they were raised to believe were representatives of Jesus Christ. . . .

. . . At its most grim, the nuns speak of repeated rapes, and of a Catholic hierarchy that did little to protect them.

. . . The Vatican has long been aware of nuns sexually abused by priests and bishops in Asia, Europe, South America and Africa, but it has done very little to stop it, The Associated Press reported last year.

Now, the AP has investigated the situation in a single country — India — and uncovered a decades-long history of nuns enduring sexual abuse from within the church. Nuns described in detail the sexual pressure they endured from priests, and nearly two dozen other people — nuns, former nuns and priests, and others — said they had direct knowledge of such incidents. . . .

. . . But this summer, one Indian nun forced the issue into the open.

When repeated complaints to church officials brought no response, the 44-year-old nun filed a police complaint against the bishop who oversees her religious order, accusing him of raping her 13 times over two years. . . .

. . . Catholic authorities have said little about the case, with India’s Catholic Bishops’ Conference saying in an October statement that it has no jurisdiction over individual bishops, and that the investigation and court case, which could take many years, must run their course. . . .

.

This is absolutely intolerable and the Bishops and the priests need to quit behaving like this.

These are not “minors” that are being victimized. (Although I am certain hirelings like this would not necessarily stop at minors if these allegations are true).

I will be watching closely the February 2019 Vatican Conference at how these Bishops plan to reign in themselves.

This is a worldwide problem that is LONGSTANDING and needs to be dealt with, via prayer AND action.

Some follow up.

Order may censure for disobedience nun who protested rape-accused bishop

Bishop Franco Mulakkal of Jullundur.

Bishop Franco Mulakkal of Jullundur.

Kochi, India, Jan 9, 2019 / 02:37 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- The superior general of the Franciscan Clarist Congregation issued last week a letter of warning to Sister Lucy Kalapura, who has been accused of several acts of disobedience, including a protest of the handling of another nun’s accusation that a bishop serially raped her.

Sr. Ann Joseph sent the Jan. 1 letter to Sr. Kalapura asking that she appear before her Jan. 9 to explain the alleged disobediences, or face expulsion from the congregation. . . .

. . . Bishop Mulakkal has been accused by a nun of the Missionaries of Jesus of sexually assaulting her 13 times between 2014 and 2016. He was arrested Sept. 21, 2018, but was released on bail. A police investigation is ongoing, and the bishop has been temporarily removed from his responsibilities as Bishop of Jullundur. . . . .

women in that situation have to just leave. they do not have to put up with anything like that. Result: the Church loses – the women regain their dignity. This not the suffering the NT says we have to endure.
