Hey there y’all!

I’m a recent high school grad nearing the middle of a gap year to work. In the next year, I’m preparing to pursue my nursing degree (woohoo!).

My faith is a huge part of my life, and I love taking the time to attend daily Mass, have a stable prayer routine, and have strong, healthy community around me. It truly is a great way to live.

I feel drawn to the single dedicated life for a wealth of reasons, and the nursing profession seems like a great way for me to live in service to Christ and the community.

All this being said, I’m aware that nursing school becomes very intensive. Clinical shifts can start in the early hours of the morning, and the curriculum requires tons of study hours. I’m concerned about slumping in my prayer life or having to skip daily Mass in order to keep up my studies. Are there any other nursing students out there who dealt with these questions?

Also, after college, I know 3 12-hour shift rotations, often during the night, are not uncommon for new nurses in particular. Is daily Mass advisable in such situations? How do you balance an RN schedule with a healthy prayer life?

Thank you in advance for your perspective, pray for me!

Don’t over burden yourself with things which the Church herself doesn’t burden you with.

Mass is only a requirement for Holy Days and Sundays. If your training schedule is intense, I would strongly recommend you not being too hard on yourself or placing heavy burdens on yourself.

You will have different periods of your life when your prayer life may change in ways that feel like a slump, but it might be something else entirely. It might be an opportunity to give to God what you have and let Him multiply it as the loaves and fishes.

Nursing might even lend itself to some opportunities to attend mass at work as some hospitals have mass available.

May God Bless you in your studies and in your service to His work with your nursing skills!

This is exactly what I do when I schedule classes.

Nursing school is very intense and competitive which is why I decided to switch from Nursing to English Literature. I think you’ll do fine in it though. Going to as many daily masses helped me a lot.

hey thee y’all! thank you for offering your perspective so far, it’s really helpful.

for some more context, ive accepted an 830-5 full-time job in a clinic with plans to be doing my schooling in the evening (they’ll be helping pay tuition, along with my salary). did anyone else have a similar situation? how did you balance faith with a more intense work/school schedule?

im taking a larger workload than most people my age, and the last thing id want is for my faith life to suffer, to lose my job, or get poor grades because im not focusing.
