I can’t find the answer to this question anywhere…

"When one becomes saved, their name is written in the book of life. Is their name then erased when they become ‘unsaved’ ? "

So, my questions are, when is our name written in the book of life, and, depending on when that is, can our name be erased?

Help??

Concisely, one is saved when God says one is saved. That happens the split second after one dies.

But they will come back with “Luke 10:20 and Philippians 4:3 say that our names ARE written in the book of Life.” As in, they already are there… it’s not a future event.

Exodus 32:33 "But the Lord says to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against me, him, will I blot out of my book.”

When we take all that scripture has to say it becomes clear that If we commit a deadly sin against God and do not confess and repent we will be blotted out.

I’ve noticed something interesting about references to the Book of Life in Sacred Scripture. There are references to one’s name having been written, references to blotting the name out, but no references to actually writing the name. In general I agree with the Tomster–God doesn’t need to keep writing and erasing our names every time we come into and fall out of grace. He knows the end from the beginning, which means that at the moment of creation he already knew what shape I would be in at my death, because of my own free-will decisions, and my name is written or not written based on that.

The Lord orders angels to write down names, in the OT.

He’s the King of Kings. Of course He employs scribes to take dictation. 🙂 And thus the expression “recording angel”.

Malachi 3:16: “Then they that feared the Lord spoke every one with his neighbour: and the Lord gave ear, and heard it: and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that fear the Lord, and think on his name.”

How about this.
Our names are written in the book of Life at baptism.
At that point Original sin is eradicated and we are restored to God.
If we later reject God and enter in to mortal sin, our names are “Blotted Out”.
If we repent and return, our names are restored in the Book of Life.

Thus, when we die, we can only enter heaven if our name is (currently) in the Book of Life. That is, if we die in a state of saving grace.

Please note that scripture talks about the names of the saved being written in “The Book of Life.” In Revelation 13:8 we read, “and all who dwell on earth will worship it, every one whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb that was slain.”

Now, take note that the names written in the book of life of the Lamb that was slain are the names of the saved and they have been written in the book since before the foundation of the world. Not everybody’s name is written in the book of life. Moreover, it’s pretty clear from scripture that some people’s names couldn’t be written in the book of life because they never believed in Jesus as their Savior.

According to scripture a person’s name can be in the book of life, but once there that it can also be blotted out. This is evidenced by Revelation 3:4-5 where it says,
“Yet you have still a few persons in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes; they will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy. If you conquer, you will be clothed like them in white robes, and I will not blot your name out of the book of life; I will confess your name before my Father and before his angels.”
This is also evidenced in Psalm 69:28 where it says,
“Let them be blotted out of the book of the living; let them not be enrolled among the righteous.”
Now, if a person’s name is in the book of life they are saved. If their name is blotted out they have lost their salvation. Note, they are saved and then they are no longer saved. Once again, “once saved always saved” doesn’t meet the scriptural test.

Now let’s take another look at Revelation 3:4-5. It says,
“Yet you have still a few persons in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes; they will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy. If you conquer, you will be clothed like them in white robes, and I will not blot your name out of the book of life; I will confess your name before my Father and before his angels.”
Take note that these people are worthy for they have not soiled their clothes[they are not sinners]. And also note that it says “If you conquer” I will not blot your name out of the book of life. These poeple obviously have something that “they must do”. They must not sin and they must conquer.

Jesus also talks about the person who conquers in Rev 2:7 where he says,
“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who **conquers **I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.”
Then again in Rev. 2:11 Jesus says,
“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who conquers shall not be hurt by the second death.”
Then again in Rev. 2:17 Jesus says,
“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who **conquers **I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone which no one knows except him who receives it.”
Then again in Rev 2:26-28
“He who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, I will give him power over the nations, and he shall rule them with a rod of iron, as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received power from my Father; and I will give him the morning star.”
And finally Jesus says it again in Rev 3:12, "He who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God; never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name."

But wait, Jesus says it again in Rev 3:21-22
“He who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I myself conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’”
And just when we thought it wouldn’t be said again, we find in Rev 21:7-8 another interesting statement that says,
“He who conquers shall have this heritage, and I will be his God and he shall be my son. But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the polluted, as for murderers, fornicators, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their lot shall be in the lake that burns with fire and sulphur, which is the second death.”
And look at what happens to the cowardly, the faithless, the polluted, the murderers, fornicators, sorcerers, idolater, and all the liars.

In a final warning Jesus tells us in Rev 22:18-19,
"I warn every one who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if any one adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, and if any one takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.
Please take note that Jesus is talking about heaven, and that if anyone adds or subtracts to the words of this book God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city. In other words that person was saved but has now lost that salvation. There share in the tree of life and in the holy city will be taken from them. They have lost their salvation.

The portion of the quote that says, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book. is translated in the King James version as,
“God shall take away his part out of the book of life,”
OSAS falls hard under the scriptural references pertaining to the book of life.
