Ok, here goes.

I have to write a paper over the Thanksgiving break about nutrition in England. One thing my prof specifically wants is if the country we choose has anything like the FDA (fda.gov) and MyPyramid (mypyramid.gov)). The only thing that I have found so far is the
5-A-Day campaign in England. Maybe I’m not using the correct words in the search? I know some of you are from England, so I thought I would ask here, and since some of you have kids, I figured you would know 🙂

Can anyone help me out? I would sure appreciate it!

Hi im from England so i hope i can help. There is a 5-a-day campaign trying to encourage everyone ( not only children) to eat 5 portions of fruit and veg a day. A lot of food packaging has messages on them such as ‘this product contain one of your 5-a-day’. There is also a goverment scheme which allows children milk and a piece of fruit at school every day if they are under 5. Also if you are on certain benefits you can recieve free tokens for cow’s milk or vegtables whilst pregnant or if you have a child under 5 living with you. There is also a well known television chef called Jamie Oliver who has successfully camgained for healthier school dinners. Scotland has also recently passed a law that all children of school age are entitled to free school dinner ( i think) and there is a proposal for this in England also. Im not sure if this will be any use but you are welcome to pm me if you want more specific info and i will try to help.🙂

Egads, it’s the FDA on steroids!!;)
After all the food scares of the 80’s and 90’s in the UK’s highly intensive agricultural and food industries (remember the mad cows?), if there’s one area that UK governments have to be seen to be active, it’s this one.

We have a similar program in the US called Women, Infants, and Children, or WIC. They get a voucher that is specfic to their pregnancy or well-baby checkup, for such things as gallons of milk, iron-fortified cereal, peanut butter or whole wheat bread. There is also a well known television chef called Jamie Oliver LOVE JAMIE!!! He’s on Food Network!!!who has successfully camgained for healthier school dinners. I actually like the UK’s site, it’s a lot more clear than the US one.

The FDA really doesn’t handle food. The Department of Agriculture does, and also the WIC and SNAP (used to be food stamps- but they haven’t been stamps for a long time, decades. They cone were vouchers that looked almost like money, now they are an electronic debit card).
