Once, (within a year ago), Presbyterian (active Church of Scotland) friends of my fiancee (same background, not active) actually asked her if I (a practising Catholic) was allowed by the Church to read the Bible. Seriously.
She said yes, as otherwise it would be helluva difficult for me to help out via my occasional sunday mass readings.
I told her she should have said no and claimed that the parish priest came around every week to check the cellophane wrapper was still on my Bible, to ensure I had not been reading it.
They would easily have believed her. Easily.
