No kidding.Well, now that you’ve been informed of that, I can only imagine that you smacked your forehead with your hand and seriously questioned Catholic teaching and your salvation.![]()

Not only that, printed copies of the Bible were as rare as hen’s teeth and too expensive as well. Definitely out of the reach of the common man. Many people seem to forget that in the Middle Ages, and for centuries after, literacy was rare so that most people couldn’t have read a Bible if they were given a copy.
Also till the printing press became available all Bibles had to be laboriously hand-copied - and skilled copyists were even more rare than literate people. There just were not enough bibles for every family to have one even if they could read.
Let me ask, has she been reading the Chick tracts?my ex-sister-in-law once told me that there were tunnels between rectories and convents so that the priests and nuns could secretly get it on, if you know what i mean. she added that there were cemeteries full of dead babies that had been conceived by these priests and nuns.
i do not know if such bigotry is still out there. my ex-sister-in-law must be about 65 years old.
They aren’t concerned with truth. That’s why they find themselves attacking the Church in the first place.A consistently “nutty” thing I see often is the outright rejection of fact, often from the agnostic-atheist camps. They make such extraordinary claims of what they THINK the Catholic Church says on various topics, but the moment you try to stick the facts under their noses, or even suggest looking at Catholic sources (not mainstream media news or opinion pieces), they refuse to…gee…I wonder why?![]()
You speak the truth, my friend. Evil darkens the intellect. Which is why it’s so ironic that they’re (atheists and agnostics) the ones who are attempting to be the “champions of reason”. And again, oh gee, I wonder what religion is known for it’s contributions to logic and reason…couldn’t possibly be the Catholic Church, could it? GASP!!!They aren’t concerned with truth. That’s why they find themselves attacking the Church in the first place.
It’s the same with many protestants;
“you believe this”
“no I don’t! here are infallibly defined documents”
“yes you do”
Brick wall immediately, for no other reason that their heads are brick walls.
…and that’s when you say, “So did you come up with that opinion on your own, or is it something you’ve pieced together from various soundbites?”A few that I’ve heard…
friend: “The ancient church used to promote homosexuality”
Me: “Where on earth did you hear that?”
friend: “I researched it for class.”
another friend: “I believe that any animal that has an owner, when that animal dies and then it’s owner dies, then the animal will go to heaven with its owner. There’s a legend that says all the dead animals are on a rainbow in heaven.”
Mom(a “catholic”): God isn’t perfect
me:
an old friend: Catholics are hypocrites. They’re ignorant, hypocritical, stupid, mean, blah blah blah…etc. etc. etc.
me: thinking to myself So…you’re being mean, cruel, and harsh… telling us we’re awful people…while you’re the one being harsh, cruel, mean, disrespectful, etc…makes sense![]()
I ask them this:I have often heard from protestants that Catholics are not ChristianOnce when a very insistant man said that I replied that radical muslims in the middle east and northern Africa don’t seem to have a problem identifing us as Christians when they bomb Christian churches.
Yeah and I tell those who claim we do not read the Bible:I have been told that Catholics don’t read the Bible.
I went to a Southern Baptist church last mother’s day as sort of a present to my great-grandmother (She says Catholicism is heathenistic and this is what she wanted as a gift.) I told her it wouldn’t change anything but she asked me to come anyway. Didn’t think about it and first prayer in, made the sign of the cross and people literally scooted away from me like I had just pulled a gun out. Needless to say the service was followed by quite a bit of commentary.
My brother-in-law is Southern Baptist and involved in prison ministries. When I began to date my now husband, my husband asked him what he knew about Catholics. His answer was “If I’m not mistaken, I think there are 2 kinds of Catholics…Roman Catholics and Saved Catholics. I think only Saved Catholics believe in Jesus.” This same man was ordained through his church as a minister, and when he got a little uppity about it in front of my other brother-in-law, second brother-in-law had his dog ordained. (I thought he was just joking, but this legitimately happened. Apparently it can all be done online by just filling out a quick form now.) Brother-in-law #2 then informed me “You may believe in a god of Rome, but my dog can perform the services at his next marriage.”
Sometimes things are so far off, all you can do is laugh.
:ehh:My brother informed me once that the Catholic Church teaches that the Pope gets to decide in heaven. He declares someone a saint and in heaven, and God must obey.
My best friend is a Protestant who believes that about us; that we think God has to obey when a priest tells someone in Confession that his sins are forgiven. My brother informed me once that the Catholic Church teaches that the Pope gets to decide in heaven. He declares someone a saint and in heaven, and God must obey.
And with the Eucharist as well. “Catholic priests think that they can force God to enter bread and wine, like He has to obey them.”My best friend is a Protestant who believes that about us; that we think God has to obey when a priest tells someone in Confession that his sins are forgiven.
